Drake has been a long-time ambassador for the Toronto Raptors and it’s only fitting that he’d want to be at the forefront of a new WNBA team in his hometown.

The superstar rapper made a simple call to action on his Instagram page Wednesday, sending a message to the WNBA: “I need a Toronto team.”

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert recently stated in an interview with ESPN that the league is looking to expand massively through the next five years.

"We're doing all that data mining now," Engelbert said to ESPN’s Tisha Thompson and Mechelle Voepel. "I suspect by next summer or this time next year, in our 26th season, we'll be talking about the number of teams and a list of where."

Basketball has never been more popular in Canada and Toronto is one of the largest markets in North America currently without a WNBA team. It’s frankly overdue.

In 2019, entrepreneurs Daniel Ascott and Max Abrahams put together a bid for a WNBA team in Toronto, and while the bid was evidently unsuccessful, the group is still lobbying for a team, largely through an active Twitter account.

It will take more than Drake’s clout within the entertainment and basketball world to bring a team to Toronto, but it’s always made sense for a basketball-crazed market to receive a WNBA team, and there’s no better time than the present.
