How Doughty Could Be a Potential Replacement for Pietrangelo in 4 Nations Face-Off
Drew Doughty has spent the beginning of the 2024-25 season placed on (IR) injured reserve, but that's all about to change. As he awaits his comeback to the Los Angeles Kings, Doughty spoke to the media regarding the opportunity to be selected for the 4 Nations Face-Off occurring next month in Boston and Montreal. He pointed out that his health is the top priority, and he will only participate if he's fully recovered and able to contribute at his best–and if he's asked, of course.
As the date for the 4 Nations appears closer, Alex Pietrangelo of the Vegas Golden Knights pulled out of the competition recently due to an undisclosed injury however, the King City native posted 24:22 in ice time after yesterday's 4-1 win against the Florida Panthers. Some have speculated that he'd been able to recover quickly while others theorize it is a low-stakes tournament for the 6-foot-4 defenseman. As the league is prompted by player safety concerns, it faces the ongoing challenge of balancing physicality with a player's well-being.
With Pietrangelo out of the picture, Doughty hopes to fill his position for Team Canada as the seasoned professional represented his home country at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics with a gold medal, following the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. His experience in the league alongside on the international stage, coupled with his leadership abilities, makes him a perfect contender for a spot on the national team.

According to TSN commentator Pierre LeBrun, Doughty's return is "imminent" and "He should be play his first game with Kings within next 3-5 games. If he can show he's up to speed in time for 4 Nations, has a real shot at being the guy."
As fans eagerly anticipate the return of their star player from injury, the team's performance is expected to improve substantially.
Considering Team Canada has until Feb. 11th to decide on Pietrangelo's replacement, the decision rests with the management and will give plenty of time to fill with a suitable candidate. While several and some of the greatest players in the NHL are under evaluation, narrowing down the roster and choosing the final lineup comes down to a combination of skill, grit, and winning pedigree–three things that Drew Doughty has in spades.
