New York Islanders coach Doug Weight was not pleased after Brock Nelson’s goal against the Pittsburgh Penguins was overturned because of a goaltender interference coach’s challenge.

With time running out in the first period of their Friday game, New York forward Jason Chimera whipped a gorgeous pass to Nelson who finished the play past Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury before the buzzer.

The Penguins quickly challenged saying forward Islanders forward Alan Quine interfered with Fleury. After a review it was determined Quine did indeed interfere with Fleury and was not pushed into the netminder by Pittsburgh defenseman Chad Ruhwedel.

Here is the NHL’s explanation of the play:

After reviewing all available replays and consulting with NHL Hockey Operations staff, the Referee determined that Quine interfered with Fleury before the puck crossed the goal line. According to Rule 78.7, “The standard for overturning the call in the event of a ‘GOAL’ call on the ice is that the Referee, after reviewing any and all available replays and consulting with the Toronto Video Room, determines that the goal should have been disallowed due to ‘Interference on the Goalkeeper,’ as described in Rules 69.1, 69.3 and 69.4.”

After referee Mike Leggo announced that the goal had been called off, Weight appeared to start shouting expletives.

It’s easy to understand Weight’s frustration on the play. The Islanders came into the game two points behind the Boston Bruins for the last Eastern Conference Wild Card spot with two games in hand. That goal would have given New York an early 1-0 lead in the crucial contest.

The Islanders ended up winning 4-3 in a shootout and after the game, Weight was mum on the overturned goal.

“I still think it’s a goal,” Weight said according to Newsday. “But you gotta move on.”
