Double injury blow for struggling Dragons

Struggling Dragons have received a double blow following long-term injuries to Cai Evans and Angus O'Brien.

Evans, 25, has been ruled out for at least the rest of the season after having surgery for a ruptured Achilles injury suffered during the Challenge Cup defeat at Rodney Parade earlier this month. He could be out of action for nine months.

The Wales full-back, who started against South Africa in a World Cup warm-up match in August 2023, faces an uncertain future with his current contract up at the end of the season.

O'Brien, 30, has also been ruled out after surgery on a thumb fracture sustained in the same game.

"It's a shame to lose both players to injury at a time when both were producing positive performances," said interim head coach Filo Tiatia.

"Cai has been unlucky with injury, so we feel for him. He is a top-quality man and he now has started that recovery journey with our staff and support.

"Angus will also be out for a spell. He's had a thumb operation so we will see how he goes and look to get him back as soon as possible."

Lloyd Evans and Will Reed with cover the fly-half position, while Huw Anderson has filled the full-back role.

Dragons pop up the United Rugby Championship (URC) table with eight defeats in nine matches, while they bowed out of the European Challenge Cup last weekend following a record 60-10 defeat against South African side Lions.

The Gwent region next face Munster at Rodney Parade on Saturday evening.
