‘I don’t think’ – Arne Slot makes honest Jurgen Klopp admission after Liverpool beat Man City
Liverpool extended their winning run to seven matches in all competitions by beating Manchester City 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday.
In one of the most anticipated clashes of the season, the Reds extended their lead at the top to nine points after a deserved win against Pep Guardiola’s side.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot is elated with his team’s position, but he is not getting carried away.
With so many games left to be played, it is highly possible that Arsenal, Chelsea or City can improve their form and gradually close the gap.
Slot said that nobody, including himself, thought Liverpool would be in this position.
He said, as quoted by BBC Sport: “I don’t think anyone, including me, would have predicted this [start]. I knew Jurgen [Klopp] left the team in a very good place.
“But still, to win so much with all the difficult teams we have played already is not something you could predict at the start of the season.”
Minor tweaks under Arne Slot major reason for transformation
Klopp did a terrific job at Liverpool, and his legacy is engraved in the club’s history.
Defender Joe Gomez rightly said that Slot didn’t want to fill Klopp’s shoes or be like him.
He did not make any major changes to the squad in the summer and is basically playing with the same team as last season.
However, he has made subtle changes to the system.
Phil McNulty of BBC Sport noted the current Liverpool side is the ‘perfect mix and match of Jurgen Klopp’s heavy metal football, then the calmer symphonies of his successor Arne Slot’.
This means Liverpool still retains the high-octane pressing traits they inherited from Klopp, but they take a calmer approach in their build-up, which is why they have an outstanding defensive record.
