As a country mourns the loss of the incredible Gord Downie, another Canadian icon paid his respects to the former frontman of The Tragically Hip.

Don Cherry used the final few minutes of Saturday’s “Coach’s Corner” to share some stories and reflect on a few of his fondest memories of Downie, who succumbed to terminal brain cancer earlier this week.

The orated tribute began with Cherry discussing his connection to Downie’s hometown of Amherstview, Ont — a town just outside of Cherry’s hometown of Kingston. Cherry then went on to discuss his cameo in the music video for “The Darkest One” in which he delivers a couple of buckets of fried chicken to Downie followed by an encounter with the Trailer Park Boys that apparently escalated a lot quicker than was originally intended.

Cherry then went on to promote Downie’s show “Secret Path” before capping off the segment with video of Cherry, Downie and Bobby Orr talking and laughing at an NHL game last year.

“What a guy Gordie was, God love him,” he said, seconds before the video faded out with a shot of Downie resting his hand on Cherry’s heart.
