Don Cherry was "really upset" with Shawn Thornton on Saturday night.

The Coach's Corner commentator used his Hockey Night in Canada segment to express his displeasure with the Boston Bruins forward, who took down defenceless Pittsburgh Penguins blue-liner Brooks Orpik from behind during a scrum.

Thornton proceeded to pummel Orpik as he lay on the ice. The six-foot-two rearguard left on a stretcher after several tense moments, while the Boston winger received a match penalty for his infraction.

"Thornton has gone bananas here," Cherry said. "...I feel so sorry for Orpik."

Prior to Thornton's actions, Boston's Brad Marchand was kneed in the head by James Neal. Earlier in the game, Orpik nailed Bruins forward Loui Eriksson, forcing him to leave the contest.
