Liverpool's Dominik Szoboszlai will be seeking to get revenge on his club captain as they battle out in the Nations League

Hungary will take on the Netherlands in the third round of the competition at Puskás Aréna Park on Friday (11 October). It will be the first time that both Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk come face to face at international level.

Netherlands currently sit second in the Group C while Hungary sit bottom of the table.

Shocking Hungary results

Hungary's form against the Netherlands is shocking to say the least. They have faced each other 17 times, with the Oranje winning 10 of those ties and losing just five - the last all the way back in 1984.

Hungary's recent record is even worse having lost each of their last six games and conceded a whopping 34 goals to the Netherlands in those matches - an average of 5.6 goals per game.

They last time they faced each other exactly eight years ago in a World Cup qualifier, Hungary suffered one their biggest and most embarrassing defeats in recent history losing 8-1. It was a national tragedy that sparked outrage in the country.

That's why Friday's game will be an emotionally charged one for the Liverpool midfielder.

Szoboszlai will be itching to rewrite history, a victory for Hungary will mean forgetting the past and putting things right.

It will also give the 23-year-old bragging rights over teammates Van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch. However, Marco Rossi's side have a lot to prove.

Despite a dismal Euros and a winless start to the Nations League campaign, Hungary have a great track-record at home securing nine wins and two draws in their last 11 games. Hungary are yet to find their shooting boots in the Nations League either, after being thrashed 5-0 by Germany and managing a goalless draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

As the Bosnians actually managed to find the back of the net last month, Hungary are currently propping up the League A Group 3 standings in last place, which would mean an automatic demotion back down to tier two in the next campaign.

Ronald Koeman's side however seem to have bounced back after crashing out of the Euros to England in the semi-final. His team put five passed Bosnia before drawing 2-2 with Germany. While Germany and Netherland's are fighting for the top spot, Oranje's inferior goal difference means they will have to settle for second although that would still be enough for quarter-final qualification.
