Dolphins training camp report: Who impressed, who didn’t and who’s missing

Notes and observations from Wednesday’s Dolphins training camp session:

Does Skylar Thompson have a legitimate chance to wrest the No. 2 quarterback job from Mike White?

While we’re not permitted to identify order of the quarterbacks in practice, it’s notable that Thompson has been receiving a ton of work this week after starting last Friday’s game. It’s also notable the players whom Thompson has been paired alongside, compared with White. (Again, team rules prohibit expanding on that.)

While Thompson received snaps Monday, White didn’t get any snaps that day. This will be fascinating to monitor.

White was still listed second, and Thompson third, on this week’s depth chart.

Among the standouts on Wednesday: rookie cornerback Isaiah Johnson, rookie running back Jaylen Wright, edge players Chop Robinson and Emmanuel Ogbah and safety Marcus Maye.

The Dolphins remained without a bunch of players. Some appeared to be sitting out to give them a rest day in advance of Thursday’s joint practice with Washington.

At running back, Jeff Wilson Jr. (nose) and Salvon Ahmed weren’t participating. Ahmed might be practicing a day and then taking off a day as a precaution with his troublesome foot. Raheem Mostert also wasn’t spotted; he might have had a rest day.

At receiver, Jaylen Waddle was spotted but he didn’t appear to be participating in practice; Mike McDaniel said he has minor injury. Odell Beckham Jr. (PUP) and Anthony Schwartz remain out. Tyreek Hill appeared to be getting a veteran’s rest day.

At tight end, Jody Fortson Jr. and Tanner Conner remain out. Jonnu Smith wasn’t spotted; he might have been receiving a veteran’s rest day.

At center, Aaron Brewer (hand) remains out. Terron Armstead received a veteran’s rest day.

Defensively, the Dolphins remained without defensive tackle Benito Jones, who has missed a week of practice. McDaniel listed him as day-to-day. Calais Campbell appeared to be getting a veteran’s rest day.

At inside linebacker, Anthony Walker Jr. remained out. David Long Jr., who had a knee issue early in training camp, didn’t practice initially, perhaps for maintenance reasons. Ezekiel Vandenburgh was working with a trainer.

Edge player Mo Kamara returned after missing three consecutive practices.

Cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey and Ethan Bonner (concussion symptoms) remain sidelined. McDaniel implied that Ramsey’s issue is nothing serious.

Kendall Fuller sat out; it also might have been a veteran’s rest day as Fuller prepares to compete against his former team on Thursday and Saturday.

Cornerback Cam Smith, who returned to practice Monday after missing most of two weeks, had an elevated role amid all the absences.

At safety, Jevon Holland and Jordan Poyer (finger) remain out. McDaniel said Holland’s issue is minor.

Tight end Julian Hill wore the orange practice jersey bestowed on the player who stood out in the previous day’s practice.

Running back De’Von Achane had a good run up the middle to begin 11-on-11 drills.

Ogbah snuck past Kendall Lamm to stop Achane for a minimal gain. Ogbah continues to have an impressive camp.

Defensive tackle Brandon Pili stopped a run for no gain.

Jaelan Phillips participated in 11-on-11 work, a good sign on his third day off PUP. He seems to be doing everything his teammates are.

Cornerback Siran Neal was called for pass interference on a deep Tua Tagovailoa throw to Braylon Sanders.

Skylar Thompson hit FAU rookie receiver Je’Quan Burton for a 15-yard gain.

Jaylen Wright made a nice cut for a 30-yard run that likely would have been a touchdown in a game. He had a second very good run behind a Jack Driscoll block.

But Wright also fumbled on a Nik Needham tackle in the backfield; cornerback Jason Maitre recovered.

And Curtis Bolton had a tackle for loss on a pitch to Wright.

Cornerback Cam Smith had a tackle for loss on a short throw to Achane.

Tagovailoa hit Malik Washington for a short gain. Washington and Eriz Ezukanma are the top contenders for the No. 6 receiver job. There might be room for both of them (as the fifth and sixth receivers) if Beckham begins the season on PUP.

New linebacker David Anenih deflected a pass. And then Needham had a tackle for loss.

Rookie cornerback Isaiah Johnson broke up a pass from Skylar Thompson to Malik Washington in the back of the end zone. And Johnson followed that up with another breakup in the end zone, also on a pass to Washington.

The Syracuse rookie corner continues to flash.

Zach Sieler sacked Tagovailoa in 11 on 11 work when the team moved inside the indoor facility.

Washington dropped a slant from Tagovailoa that was thrown behind him.

Maye stopped Achane on a wheel route for a three-yard gain.

Miami Heat rookies, including first-round pick Kel’El Ware, attended practice.
