Dolphins training camp report: Who impressed and news from joint session with Washington

News, notes and observations from the Dolphins’ joint practice with the Washington Commanders on Thursday in Miami Gardens:

Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels, the second overall pick in April’s NFL Draft, torched the Dolphins secondary for five touchdowns in red zone drills early in practice, but the caveat is that Miami was without three starters in its defensive backfield – Jalen Ramsey, Jevon Holland and Jordan Poyer. And Miami’s pass defense was much better in 11-on-11 work.

The Dolphins front seven had some tackles for short gains or losses, and Marcus Maye had an interception on a Daniels pass that deflected off a Washington tight end. Kendall Fuller also intercepted Daniels.

Offensively, Mike White — trying to win the backup QB job - had two very nice throws. Salvon Ahmad, Durham Smythe and River Cracraft had some good moments. And rookie left tackle Patrick Paul held his own.

Here’s who didn’t participate in practice offensively: Center Aaron Brewer (hand), receiver Jaylen Waddle (who has now missed seven practices with something Mike McDaniel called minor), running back Jeff Wilson Jr. (nose), receiver Anthony Schwartz and tight end Tanner Conner.

Tight end Jody Fortson Jr, who sustained a stinger during the preseason opener against Atlanta, worked in a red noncontact jersey.

Receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who is on the physically unable to perform list, was on the side of the field doing conditioning work.

Here’s who didn’t participate in practice defensively: cornerbacks Ramsey and Ethan Bonner (concussion symptoms), safeties Poyer (thumb) and Holland, linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. (who has missed much of camp) and defensive tackle Benito Jones (who has missed seven practices in a row and is “day-to-day,” according to McDaniel).

McDaniel has suggested that the injuries to Ramsey and Holland aren’t serious.

Linebacker Jaelan Phillips participated in the early stages of practice but did not participate initially in 11-on-11 drills as he works his way back from last November’s torn Achilles. Phillips came off PUP on Monday.

Linebacker Bradley Chubb remains on PUP but was on the field very early Thursday morning doing rehab work for several hours.

Linebacker Ezekiel Vandenburgh remained limited.

Here’s how the Dolphins’ offensive red zone work unfolded: Raheem Mostert had a 5-yard run, and Mostert then ran for 3. De’Von Achane then ran for 2. Then a Tua Tagovailoa pass into the end zone to Tyreek Hill was broken up by Washington cornerback Mike Sainristil…

A run by tight end Jonnu Smith, a play which has generally worked during camp, was bottled up for a 2-yard loss… Erik Ezukanma dropped what should have been a touchdown throw from Skylar Thompson…

River Cracraft caught a 5-yard TD from Tagovailoa… Mike White then hit Durham Smythe for a touchdown…

Achane was stopped just short of the goal line on a 3-yard gain.. A short screen from White to Smith was stopped short of the goal line as well…Jamin Davis had a sack on Tagovailoa.

Washington had a slight line of scrimmage edge in those red zone drills.

Guard Robert Jones had difficulty handling Redskins standout defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, who had a sack, but rookie left tackle Patrick Paul held his own during the drills.

Here’s how the Dolphins’ defensive red zone work unfolded: Austin Ekeler had a respectable gain on a left side run.. Washington rookie quarterback Daniels hit Terry McLaurin for a touchdown pass, beating Fuller. Then the floodgates opened, with Miami’s defense on its heels…

Washington receiver Jamison Crowder then beat safety Patrick McMorris for a touchdown, on a throw from Daniels…

Daniels threw three more TDs, including one to Ekeler and another to McClaurin, beating Maye… Kader Kohou had a nice tackle for loss but allowed one of the touchdown throws.

Washington’s offense dominated the early red zone drills with at least five touchdowns.

Tagovailoa began the Dolphins’ offensive 11-on-11 drills by overthrowing Hill… Achane had a small gain… Dolphins center Liam Eichenberg and DeRon Payne shoved each other after one play and needed to be separated…

Washington’s Andre Jones Jr. and a Dolphins player then had a dust-up, and Jones then lost his helmet when he tried to head butt a Dolphins player. Jones was restrained by Washington personnel…

A throw from Tagovailoa to Smythe was blown up by Washington safety Tyler Owens…

Washington’s Dorance Armstrong stopped Mostert for a tackle for a loss…Dolphins right tackle Austin Jackson was then beaten for a sack… Tagovailoa hit Smythe for 10 over the middle…

Salvon Ahmed had a 20-yard run in his best run of camp. He has missed time with a foot injury.

White threw a terrific 40 yard pass to Malik Washington, who caught it and fumbled. The referee said it was a completed pass.

Here’s how Washington’s offensive 11-on-11 drills went: Chop Robinson stonewalled a rushing attempt… Brandon Pili had a nice stop… Jonathan Harris blew up a Daniels pass with pressure up the middle….

Emmanuel Ogbah had a tackle for loss on a run by Brian Robinson… Neville Gallimore stuffed a play in the backfield.

In the second round of 11-on-11 work for the Dolphins offense, Tagovailoa hit Hill for 10 yards. Jonathan Allen then beat Eichenberg for what might have been a sack… Jaylen Wright showed his usual burst on an eight-yard run; Patrick Paul had a nice block…Ahmed had another nice run.

In the second round of 11-on-11 work for the Dolphins defense, Kohou got good pressure on Daniels on a blitz…Cam Smith had nice coverage on an incomplete deep throw from Daniels to Michael Tinsley… Marcus Maye intercepted a tipped pass on a throw by Jayden Daniels.

Fuller intercepted a pass against his former team, on a throw by Daniels that was intended for McLaurin. That was Daniels’ first pass in an end-of-game situation late in practice.
