Dolphins sign a quarterback, elevate two receivers and place a player on injured reserve
The Dolphins, short-handed at wide receiver, elevated receivers Dee Eskridge and Erik Ezukanma from the practice squad on Sunday, giving them five healthy bodies at the position for Sunday’s game at Seattle (4 p.m., CBS).
Miami also placed receiver Grant DuBose on injured reserve with a shoulder issue and signed practice squad quarterback Tim Boyle to the 53-man roster.
Boyle gives the Dolphins three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster: starter Skylar Thompson, Tyler Huntley and Boyle. Tua Tagovailoa, who’s in concussion protocol, is on injured reserve and will miss at least four games.
Eskridge and Ezukanma join Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Braxton Berrios as healthy wide receivers on the 53-man roster. Rookie receiver Malik Washington is doubtful for the game with a quadriceps injury that sidelined him for the first two games.
The 6-2 Ezukanma, a fourth round pick in 2022, was part of the Dolphins’ final round of cuts on Aug. 27 but was immediately re-signed to the practice squad. In three games (and 39 offensive snaps) over two seasons, he has one reception for three yards and five rushes for 22 yards. He missed most of last season with a neck injury but had some good moments in preseason.
The 5-9 Eskridge, drafted by Seattle 56th overall out of Western Michigan in 2021, caught 17 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown in 24 games (no starts) over three years for Seattle, which waived him in late August. He also ran eight times for 74 yards and averaged 25.2 yards on 17 kickoff returns. The Dolphins signed him to their practice squad on Aug. 29.
Boyle, who joins Huntley as veterans behind Thompson, has had very little success: He has an 0-5 career record, four touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a 55.2 career passer rating.
By putting Boyle on their 53 man roster, the Dolphins now can designate Boyle or Huntley as their inactive emergency third quarterback Sunday. The inactive emergency third QB can enter only if the other two quarterbacks are injured or disqualified. He can’t enter if the first two quarterbacks are simply benched.
The Dolphins will enter Sunday with four healthy running backs: De’Von Achane, Jeff Wilson Jr., Jaylen Wright and fullback Alec Ingold. Starting running back Raheem Mostert is doubtful with a chest injury.
Mike McDaniel said Friday that DuBose’s shoulder injury isn’t season-ending. The Dolphins can bring back eight players from injured reserve and it’s questionable if they will use one of those slots on DuBose, who played in Miami’s first two games. Three of those eight designated-to-return slots likely will be used on Tagovailoa, receiver River Cracraft and cornerback Cam Smith. All must sit out at least four weeks.
Three players on the physically unable to perform list -- linebacker Bradley Chubb, guard Isaiah Wynn and receiver Odell Beckham Jr. -- can be activated after four weeks but don’t count toward that eight-man limit.
