Dolphins’ McDaniel addresses running back injuries and Tyreek Hill video and fallout
Running back Raheem Mostert will miss Thursday’s game against Buffalo and De’Von Achane’s status is undetermined, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Wednesday.
Mostert has been nursing a chest injury, which McDaniel said he sustained early in last Sunday’s game against Jacksonville. “His injury, not many people play with,” McDaniel said.
Will Mostert only miss Thursday’s game or could he be out for a couple games? “Closer to the former but not ruling out the latter,” McDaniel said, noting the injury needs time to heal.
Achane has been dealing with an ankle injury; he limped off late in the opener after catching a pass with 1:10 left. But Achane participated in Wednesday’s practice and was moving well.
“De’Von we will see how it plays out,” McDaniel said when asked if Achane will play in Thursday’s game at Hard Rock Stadium (8:20 p.m., CBS-4, Amazon).
The Dolphins said neither Mostert nor Achane would have practiced on Monday or Tuesday if the team had done more than a walk-through. Mostert wasn’t on the field on Wednesday, but Achane was.
Rookie running back Jaylen Wright, who was a healthy scratch in Game 1, likely will be active for Thursday’s game. Jeff Wilson Jr. and Wright are the Dolphins’ two healthy running backs on the 53-man roster. Deneric Prince, a former standout at Tulsa, is the Dolphins’ practice squad running back.
McDaniel said there are “several guys we will be feeling out” to determine their availability, without mentioning names. But he said guard Liam Eichenberg (who has been limited with a shoulder injury) is OK.
McDaniel was non-committal about whether Jalen Ramsey (hamstring) and Jaelan Phillips (November torn Achilles) will play more or less than they did in the opener. “We have to plan on an uptick, same or downshift,” McDaniel said.
Eichenberg, Ramsey and Phillips were the only Dolphins listed as limited practice participants for the Monday and Tuesday injury report.
Besides Mostert, receiver Malik Washington (quadricep) is the only other Dolphins player on the 53-man roster who was not spotted at Wednesday’s practice.
TYREEK HILL FALLOUT
McDaniel was asked how he reacted when he watched the body-camera video of Tyreek Hill being handcuffed during a traffic stop.
“I think I’m emotioned out, so I’m going to try to use words that don’t... Enough people have seen me cry,” McDaniel said. “It wasn’t shock. It was sadness. Right when you see it, and an hour or two afterward, spent time talking to some players on the phone, spent some time talking to some staff members that I knew with our history together that had experienced some of the things first-hand.”
McDaniel was asked if there’s anything that Hill could have done differently after being stopped by police.
“There are always things you can do different,” McDaniel said. “We are conditioned here every day to discuss things that you can improve upon. A conversation of what provoked the unnecessary is trivial to the unnecessary.”
▪ Asked if he has spoken to Hill about past incidents, he said: “Tyreek is a different human being than when I first met him. He continues to evolve... You are held accountable for the things that people know. Sometimes when you’re taking a step forward, there’s another step back.”
▪ Asked about Hill telling police he had knee surgery, McDaniel said that Hill had a “minor procedure he makes sure he takes care of” during the offseason.
