Dolphins’ McDaniel addresses Ramsey extension, updates couple of personnel issues

The Dolphins on Friday made Jalen Ramsey the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

But it’s undetermined if he will play Sunday because of an injury, coach Mike McDaniel said Friday morning.

Sidelined for much of the last three weeks with what the team has called a hamstring injury, Ramsey was scheduled to practice at least on a limited basis on Friday.

McDaniel said Ramsey would “in some way, shape or form” practice on Friday, but McDaniel said he was not sure to what extent.

McDaniel said he doesn’t know if Ramsey will play Sunday against visiting Jacksonville (1 p.m., CBS): “If I did know, I wouldn’t tell you, but I really don’t know.”

McDaniel spoke minutes after word leaked that Ramsey reached a three-year extension worth $72.3 million, with $55.3 million guaranteed.

“I’m happy organizationally for everything we’ve done this offseason because it fits what we’re about,” McDaniel said of new contracts for Ramsey, Tua Tagovalioa, Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill.

“Jalen saw a different level of player and leader this team could benefit from. He sees that and the team has definitely benefited from it. Much was made of the team speech he gave on a sweaty July day, and unfortunately for him and the team, he got hurt. The real influencers on a team don’t have to play to possibly affect their teammates.”

McDaniel addressed other issues on Friday:

Liam Eichenberg will start at right guard on Sunday. Aaron Brewer said he’s ready to return from a hand injury; he will start at center against Jacksonville. Eichenberg had been filling in at center during Brewer’s absence.

McDaniel said the team goes over all illegal formations with players. Baltimore was called for illegal formations several times in Thursday’s opener.

With two games in five days, would the Dolphins consider NBA-like load management this week?

“You’re looking at Mr. Load Management, bro,” McDaniel cracked.

In all seriousness, McDaniel said players have noted this is the hardest they’ve practiced.

This week, veterans Calais Campbell and Terron Armstead had Wednesday off from practice.

“It is very important to me to earn their trust to know that we’ll push them while also managing their load during the week,” McDaniel said.

But there’s nothing to suggest that Miami would hold down snaps of healthy players to preserve them for Thursday’s game against Buffalo.

“Thursday night games are an extension of what a Friday is in a normal week,” McDaniel said.
