Dolphins-Jets live blog: Dolphins beat Jets in overtime behind Jonnu Smith walkoff TD

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (17) catches a pass as New York Jets cornerback D.J. Reed (4) fails to tackle him in the second quarter of an NFL game at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday, Dec. 17, 2023, in Miami Gardens, Fla.

The Miami Dolphins beat the New York Jets in overtime 32-26.

While the Dolphins kept it close, the offense was just too much in the end.

Jonnu Smith calls game:

The tight end was virtually nonexistent through four quarters.

In overtime, he turned something on, securing all three of his targets for 44 yards and the walkoff touchdown.

Tyreek Hill scores, Waddle adds 2-point conversion to tie game:

It’s officially a game, ladies and gentlemen.

With just over nine minutes left, Hill scored a four-yard touchdown to put the Dolphins within two. A catch from Waddle just minutes later would effectively tie the game at 23.

Anthony Walker Jr. questionable:

The inside linebacker injured his hamstring late in the third quarter. He is questionable to return.

Walker missed last week’s showdown in Green Bay with a hamstring injury. It’s unclear whether the same hamstring is the one that affected him today.

Dee Eskridge downgraded:

The receiver injured his knee during a kick return just before hafltime.

He was slow to get up and the Dolphins initially listed him as questionable to return.

Late in the third quarter, however, Eskridge was ruled out.

HALFTIME NOTES:

Dolphins are up 15-13

Tua Tagovailoa has only thrown three incompletions.

Both teams’ elite receiver duos are on pace for 100-yard days. Jaylen Waddle (five catches for 61 yards) and Tyreek Hill (five catches for 61 yards) hold a slight edge over DaVante Adams (four catches for 54 yards) and Garrett Wilson (three catches for 55 yards).

Fins receivers etch names in history books before halftime:

It happened on back-to-back plays.

With 23 seconds left, Tyreek Hill snagged a ball to give him his 298th catch in a Dolphins uniform. That reception tied him with Brian Hartline for the tenth-most in Dolphins history.

On the following play, Jaylen Waddle caught a pass that gave him 61 yards receiving on the day. That reception broke the franchise record for most receiving yards through the first four seasons of a player’s career. The previous record holder, Jarvis Landry, had 4,038 yards receiving to start his career.

Terron Armstead leaves again:

The Pro Bowl left tackle suffered a knee injury a few snaps into that opening drive.

After initially being listed as questionable, he returned late in the first quarter. He then subsequently was taken out.

Armstead hasn’t practiced in weeks due to a knee injury. It’s unclear if the knee that pushed him out of Sunday’s game is the same that has plagued him as of late. Rookie Patrick Paul will receive extra reps in Armstead’s absence.

Dolphins strike first:

DeVon Achane scored on a 2-yard run to put the Dolphins up 6-0.

Tua Tagovailoa looked efficient on that opening drive, spreading the ball around to three different receivers and completing all of his passes.

Inactives:

Running back Raheem Mostert will not suit up for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, NFL insider Ian Rapoport first reported.

The 10-year veteran injured his hip in the Week 11 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Although Mostert played in last week’s loss to the Green Bay Packers, he was limited in practice all week.

Linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. and nickel corner back Kader Kohou will also return after initially being listed as questionable. Walker injured his hamstring during the Week 12 matchup against the New England Patriots and missed the matchup against the Packers. Kohou, on the other hand, sustained a lower back injury that caused him to be held out for most of last week’s game in Green Bay.
