Dolphins’ Jaelan Phillips announces he will miss rest of season with knee injury

In a cruel coincidence, Dolphins edge rusher Jaelan Phillips has sustained a season-ending right leg injury for the second consecutive year.

Phillips announced on Instagram on Wednesday that he will undergo season-ending reconstructive knee surgery. The surgery will repair a partially torn ACL.

Phillips sustained the injury when his right knee hit teammate Jordan Poyer’s helmet as both tried to chase down Titans running back Tony Pollard on a long run.

Phillips initially tried to play through the discomfort before leaving for good later in the game. But the ACL tear happened when the knee collided with Poyer’s helmet, and returning to the game did not cause any additional damage for Phillips.

Poyer sustained a shin injury on the collision.

Phillips’ injury comes 10 months after he sustained a torn Achilles in his right leg last November against the Jets. He made it back for the start of the regular season and ended up playing only four games this season, finishing with six tackles and a sack.

He played in eight games last season, closing with 6.5 sacks but missing time with multiple injuries, including the season-ending Achilles.

His injury leaves Emmanuel Ogbah, Quinton Bell and rookies Chop Robinson and Mo Kamara as the only healthy edge players on the roster. Starter Bradley Chubb is not ready to return from a torn ACL sustained on Dec. 31 at Baltimore. Backup Cameron Goode isn’t yet ready to return from a torn patela tendon injury sustained in Week 18 against Buffalo.

“I believe that our lives are defined by how we handle adversity,” Phillips said on Instagram. “In these moments of uncertainty, defeat and sorrow, it is natural to question your purpose and wonder what is the meaning of this pain.

“I know my purpose is to inspire people to never give up, no matter how many times you get knocked down. I am living testimony of the power of resilience and faith, and I feel strongly in knowing that my God is greater than any obstacle. Through him I will persevere. There is nothing in life that you can’t overcome as long as you don’t quit.

“The mission is still the mission. I have unfinished business to take care of and I will come out of this trial victorious. Thank you for all your continued support and love.”

Earlier this year, the Dolphins exercised Phillips’ 2025 fifth-year option. He’s due to make $13.2 million next season.

BECKHAM BACK

Odell Beckham Jr. practiced for the first time this summer after missing months while recovering from an offseason knee procedure. He was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice.
