Dolphins claim Tyus Bowser off Seahawks practice squad
The Miami Dolphins fortified the team’s troublesome edge player depth by claiming a veteran pass rusher off the Seattle Seahawks practice squad on Thursday.
Bowser, an eight-year veteran who has appeared in 91 career games with 24 starts with Baltimore (2017-23) and Seattle (2024), was claimed to take the place of Jaelan Phillips, who suffered a season-ending right knee injury in Monday night’s 31-12 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Players claimed off another team’s practice squad must stay on their new team’s 53-man roster for at least three weeks. Bowser will likely join the team Friday, but the odds of him participating in Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots are relatively slim.
Phillips was placed on injured reserve, making room for Bowser, who has recorded 142 tackles, 19.5 sacks, four interceptions, pulled in four forced fumbles and knocked down 16 passes in his NFL career, on the 53-man roster.
Bowser has history with Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver from their time together with the Baltimore Ravens, which was from 2021 to 2023.
Last season he started four of the nine games he played for the Ravens and contributed 12 tackles, two sacks and forced one fumble.
This season Bowser, who entered the NFL as a second-round pick from the University of Houston, started one of the two games he has played for the Seahawks, and contributed one tackle in his 38 defensive snaps.
Coincidentally, the Seahawks run a similar defensive scheme to the Dolphins because their head coach, Mike Macdonald, worked with Weaver in Baltimore before becoming Seattle’s head coach.
With Phillips sidelined, the Dolphins are going to need Chop Robinson, the team’s 2024 first-round pick, Quinton Bell and Mohamed Kamara to step up, increasing their workload.
Who starts likely depends on how each edge player practices during the week.
It’s possible that Bradley Chubb and Cameron Goode, two players who began this season on the physically unable to perform list, could enter the equation, but they are presently rehabbing their injuries and remain on the PUP list for now. Chubb tore his ACL on December 31 , and Goode suffered a petalla tendon injury in the same game.
