Dolphins-49ers live blog: Fins beat 49ers behind Achane’s 100-yard rushing game

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (1) looks to pass in second quarter against San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on Sunday, December 4, 2022. Teams will meet for first time since Sunday in Miami.

The Miami Dolphins came into Sunday banged up. The San Francisco 49ers came into Sunday banged up.

Still, the game meant something as it was coach Mike McDaniel’s second matchup against coach Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers, which formerly employed McDaniel.

In the end, it was the Dolphins that emerged victorious 29-17 behind De’Von Achane’s first 100-yard rushing game this season. Achane finished with 121 yards on the ground, resulting in the Dolphins’ first 100-yard game since Week 8.

Kader Kohou pick seals victory:

Down five with roughly two minutes left, the Niners had all the time in the world to drive down and score a touchdown to beat the Dolphins.

Enter Kader Kohou.

The nickel cornerback picked off Niners quarterback Brock Purdy just after the two minute warning. Three plays later, De’Von Achane took an outside run a whopping 50 yards for the touchdown.

One Jason Sanders extra point later and the Dolphins were up 29-17.

Dolphins’ Fuller ruled out:

Cornerback Kendall Fuller was downgraded to out with a knee injury.

After yet another Jason Sanders field goal, the Dolphins remain up 22-17.

Dolphins lose two players to knee injuries:

Cornerback Kendall Fuller and linebacker Jordyn Brooks both are questionable to return with knee injuries. Brooks, however, also has a quad injury.

Both players injured themselves in the fourth quarter. Linebacker Duke Riley replaced Brooks while cornerback Storm Duck has filled in for Fuller.

The Dolphins are up 19-17 after a Niners touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Jonnu Smith becomes most productive tight end in Dolphins history:

With a catch just under the two minute mark in the third quarter, Smith set the record for most receiving yards by a tight end in franchise history. His previous catch — a 22-yard catch-and-run just a few plays earlier — gave him the franchise record for receptions as well.

He has 798 yards receiving plus 75 receptions and counting. Randy McMichael previously held the record.

The Dolphins kicked a field goal a few plays later to go up 19-10.

Tyreek Hill touchdown gives Fins lead:

The star receiver had a few drops to start the game.

Hill would soon make up for it, catching a touchdown towards the end of the second quarter to put the Dolphins up 13-7.

That touchdown pass also gave quarterback Tua Tagovailoa 100 for his career.

Missed tackles haunt Dolphins:

Two Dolphins players — safeties Jordan Poyer and Jevon Holland — couldn’t bring down Deebo Samuel who stormed ahead for the touchdown to put the Niners up 7-3.

Defensive tackles set new career marks:

In the first quarter, both Zach Sieler and Calais Campbell achieved a milestone in tackling.

Campbell reached the 900-tackle mark early in the first quarter. Similarly, Sieler got to 300 tackles.

The score, however, remains knotted at zeros.

Inactives:

Star receiver Tyreek Hill as well as starting tackles Terron Armstead and Kendall Lamm will officially suit up against the Niners.

Jaylen Waddle, however, will miss his first game of the season with a knee injury that sustained against the Houston Texans.

Other inactives include cornerback Ethan Bonner, offensive lineman Andrew Meyer, receiver Dee Eskridge as well as linebackers Channing Tindall and Mo Kamara
