How Does Claude Giroux's Current Point Streak Stack Up Against The Best In Ottawa Senators History?

At 36, Ottawa Senators veteran winger Claude Giroux is humming along this season, still looking a lot like the player he was a decade ago. Giroux just finished up a successful October, currently riding the team's longest point streak at seven games. When asked about it, as he often does in front of the opponent's net, Giroux went into deflection mode, giving credit to linemates Drake Batherson and Josh Norris.

"Yeah, I mean, our line is connecting," Giroux said after Tuesday night's 8-1 win over the St. Louis Blues. "And it's our first time playing together, all three of us, so we're having fun out there where we feel like we have a little chemistry going right now. But in saying that, we're just trying to help the team. And if that's playing good defence or scoring goals, we're trying to do that."

Giroux stands three points behind Tim Stützle for the early club lead. Stützle marvels at Giroux's commitment to the team and the city and wouldn't have been surprised to overhear the vet downplaying his personal achievements.

"If I know one person who doesn't care about seven-game point streaks, it's him," Stützle said. "All he wants is to win. Yeah, I'm super happy and thankful that we have him on our team. And obviously, he just brings it every night."

Even though Giroux isn't that into his own stats, most hockey fans like to keep an eye on them. As you'd expect, while a seven-game point streak is impressive, it's almost certainly not a club record. But it did get us wondering how far Giroux would have to go before he wanders in record territory.

It turns out that his seven-game run is not only a long way from the record, it's not even close to the longest streak among guys on his current line.

According to the NHL records site, the best Sens point streak among active Senators is held by Batherson, who had a 13-game point streak just two years ago. The Drake had 18 points during that run. He and Marian Hossa share the all-time Sens' record among guys not named Dany Heatley.

Yes, all-star Dany Heatley is the all-time Sens record holder, with a point streak more than three times longer than Giroux's current heater.

In October of 2005, the year after the cancelled NHL season, Heatley made his debut for the Senators on opening night in Toronto. That game is best known for Daniel Alfredsson scoring the first shootout goal in league history.

But in Heatley's first game for Ottawa that night, he quietly got an assist and then couldn't stop scoring. Heatley scored at least one point in his first 22 games as a Senator, posting 38 points in all.

That's one of the greatest first impressions in NHL history and a Sens' record that isn't likely to fall anytime soon.
