VfL Bochum head-coach Dieter Hecking understandably found himself in a much different mood than last week when discussing his side’s latest Bundesliga result. Instead of praising his team’s comeback from a 3-0 deficit against Leipzig, Hecking had the unfortunate task of reflecting on a 3-0 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Bochum continue to struggle on the road, drawing one match against Union Berlin and losing nine others.

“The first 30 minutes were okay, but we weren’t precise in possession and had too many inaccuracies,” Hecking remarked in his post-match interview with the Sky Germany. “We were too naive. We have to defend better. That was really nothing. We have to be honest with each other about that.

Hecking genuinely showed no desire to discuss the scene in the 86th minute that allowed Gerardo Seoane’s Fohlenelf to run up the score via a VAR awarded penalty. After noting that he felt his keeper Patrick Drewes had been unfairly judged to have fouled Nathan Ngoumou (Hecking was booked for dissent arguing the call), VfL’s head coach called the penalty “pointless” in the context of the overall performance.

A little later at the post-match press conference, Hecking did bring up the fact that Drewes couldn’t avoid contact with Ngoumou. The main takeaway from the presser, however, remained the fact that Hecking unequivocally stated that what his team just delivered constituted something “unfit for the Bundesliga level.”
