'It Didn't Look Great': Rod Brind'Amour, Martin Necas, Jalen Chatfield On Pyotr Kochetkov Injury, Shootout Loss

The Carolina Hurricanes came up short against the Columbus Blue Jackets, falling 5-4 in a shootout, but the biggest story from that game was that goaltender Pytor Kochetkov left early with an injury.

Canes defenseman Sean Walker ended up catching Kochetkov in the head as he was skating by, defending against Zach Werenski, and it didn't look good.

After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Martin Necas and Jalen Chatfield spoke with the media. Here's what they had to say:

Rod Brind'Amour

On the game:
We actually didn't play that poorly at all. I thought we played a pretty good game, we just gave them two goals to start the game. We just turned the puck over. You go nose-to-nose on a defenseman? you just can't do that. Just giving breakaways out of the o-zone? That's what kills you. So now, we're down two goals and in the NHL that's hard to [come back from] and we still almost pulled it out. Guys fought back, got ahead. They made a nice play on that last goal. A real nice pass. We get to overtime and we had our looks and it just didn't happen.

On Pyotr Kochetkov's status: Obviously we already have one goalie down. This is not ideal, that's for sure. I don't know where we're at with that, we'll see. It didn't look great, but we'll find out I guess at some point.

On the penalty kill toward the end of the game: Yeah, we did pretty good job overall. We had one little mess-up. We had the puck on our stick, and again, you have to clear it. We didn't on the one goal. Again, we were just shooting ourselves in the foot there. But to kill a four minuter at that point in the game was big. Turned out not to be that big of a deal, but it was big.

On Jalen Chatfield producing: We always talk about the D being involved and they certainly were all night. They had a couple of looks. He's a great skater so you have to get up in the rush.

Martin Necas

On the game:
We just gave them two goals in the first. It's always better to play with the lead than chasing. We had a good second. Felt like we played not a bad third. Got a big kill, but then they scored with the extra man. Tough game. Gave them a couple of goals.

On the way things have gone now 20 games into the season: We've played good obviously. Not every game was just like we planned, but we had a good start. It's one quarter of the season. It's not bad, but we're trying to build on this and just keep getting better.

On Jackson Blake: Skilled guy. Smaller guy with a lot of skill. A good skater who can see the ice. You can see that he has the skillset to be in this league and he's showing it.

On the keys to regrouping for next week: We have lots of games here. Just do a little gym recovery, go back home, enjoy the day and then get back on track. We have some tough teams coming up and we should take it as a challenge. Always fun to play against these teams and show our best.

Jalen Chatfield

On the difficulty in closing the game out in regulation:
I don't know. We have to get the job done. I thought we played pretty good. 6-on-5, they have the advantage, but we've been a pretty good team over the years at that. They got the bounce there and then when you go to shootouts, we have great skill for that, but sometimes you don't know what's going to happen.

On Pyotr Kochetkov: I just hope he's alright. It didn't look too good. I'm sure that he's back there and that they're checking on him, but I hope it's not as bad as it looks. He took a pretty hard hit right there and he was pretty vulnerable. I just hope he's alright.

On his production: Honestly, I just try to go out, compete and just do my job every night. When they come, they come. When they don't, as long as I'm in it every night helping the team win, I'm happy with that. Obviously that's all of our jobs. To come prepared and try to win games.
