Did Vance Joseph just hint Broncos will be in the running for Tony Romo?

INDIANAPOLIS — Sometimes it’s more about what a person doesn’t say than what they do. Especially when football coaches are talking.

Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph kicked off the 2017 NFL scouting combine by answering a lot of questions about his quarterback situation, namely with holdovers Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch

“We’ve got two young guys that combined to win nine games last year as starters, probably should have won two more, so we’re fine there with those two kids,” Joseph said.

And that’s two. The Broncos are fine. But what about adding a veteran quarterback to the mix … perhaps one that rhymes with … Bony Domo?

“No one is available that we can talk about,” Joseph said.

A-ha! We were right. Joseph can’t talk about any NFL veteran who currently is on another team’s roster because of anti-tampering rules, and we know who he was talking about. Tony Romo is expected to be released in the coming days, and his camp has been plotting his exit strategy and life after the Dallas Cowboys for some time now. The Broncos most certainly will be on his radar, and it’s pretty obvious he’s on theirs.

Adding Romo would be a John Elway-like stroke. He has made big, bold moves in free agency before and won’t be afraid to again. As much faith the Broncos might have in Siemian and Lynch to be a good team, Elway might believe that Romo could make the Broncos a championship-level team. However, as NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport has said, Romo might have to take a massive paycut to make it work.

If the Broncos are stuck with their two young QBs, is there faith they can survive?

“Is he ready? I’m not sure,” Joseph said of Lynch. “But obviously, he’s got great skills. He’s a tall man with a big arm. Is he ready? That’s a tough question. He had two starts last year. Trevor played also. It’s going to be an open competition. Whoever wins the job that is who is going to play, and that’s as fair as it can be.”

That and Siemian is rehabbing from his injured shoulder and should be back by the start of OTAs. But you also can see why the Broncos might want Romo. And why Joseph would say what he didn’t say about him.
