Did Jeff Monken coach at Navy? Revisiting Army football coach's history with Midshipmen

Army football coach Jeff Monken threw some fuel onto the fierce rivalry that the Army vs. Navy game is during an appearance back in October on ESPN's "The Pat McAfee Show."

"Do they still have a football program at that school?," he said in October.

Perhaps an outlandish or impromptu statement from Monken — given that Army was preparing for East Carolina in Week 8 and wasn't playing the Midshipmen for another 59 days — but one he's earned the right to make as Army is 6-4 vs. Navy in "America's Game" under him.

And while it was a "fun" troll by Monken on Brian Newberry's program at Navy, it's also a bit of a comical and ironic one to come from Monken, who has experience coaching in the Midshipmen program himself.

Monken will look to lead Army to its third consecutive win against Navy on Saturday, and its seventh in its last nine games dating back to 2016.

Here's what you need to know about Monken's time at Navy, including a look at his record at Army and his overall coaching career:

Did Jeff Monken coach at Navy?

Yes. Monken spent four seasons on Paul Johnson's staff at Navy from 2002-05. He previously served as the running backs coach at Georgia Southern for five seasons.

Joining Johnson's staff in Annapolis in 2002 after their time together at Georgia Southern, Monken primarily coached Navy's running back unit from 2002-05. He was elevated to the Midshipmen's special teams coordinator in 2006 while still coaching the running backs.

While learning Johnson's famous triple-option system — a signature of Army's offense now under Monken — the now-57-year-old Monken helped lead Navy to five straight Commander-in-Chief's trophies across the 2002 and 2007 seasons.
