What did Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance say about of his performance against the Commanders?
Quarterback Trey Lance made his first start of the season in Dallas’ season-ending loss to Washington. Will it be his last game for the Cowboys? Here’s the transcript of his media session after the game on Sunday:
On his thoughts on today’s game…
“Disappointed. I feel like I didn’t capitalize to the best of my ability on the opportunities in the red zone. So, any time you don’t score enough points to win when our defense plays as well as they did, it’s just disappointing. But at the same time, I really thankful for the opportunity. I’m thankful for all my teammates, coaches, and everyone in this organization that’s done everything for me in these last two years. It’s been a ton of fun, learned a ton. Just excited for these guys. Super proud of these guys. Anytime we’re playing in this situation like that where it’s the last one and everyone knows it, I’m still going to be thankful.”
On when he found out he was going to be starting and if he was always prepared…
“That’s the backup quarterback life and you can prepare for it like you were going to play. I found out early in the week, but excited for the opportunity. “
On how he felt in the first half…
“I think the nerves settled in pretty quickly. I felt prepared for this opportunity and disappointed that I didn’t make the most of it. [I’m] Disappointed I didn’t make the most of my opportunities at the Red Zone, specifically. Obviously, I was excited about this opportunity.”
On if his performance today was a great representation of what he can be in the NFL… “Absolutely. Any time I get the opportunity to play another team starting, it’s something that I want to do and put good stuff on tape. I’m excited to go home and watch it tonight. [Going to] learn a lot from it, some good things and some bad things, but a ton to learn.”
On low long his transition period to free agency will be…
“Honestly, I haven’t even started thinking about it like I said earlier in the week. But I feel like I would be a bad teammate to be looking ahead about things like that, especially, when I’m so grateful to have had this opportunity today.”
On the advice Dak and Cooper gave to him during and heading into the game…
“I’m really thankful for those two guys, specifically, that they’ve done everything and gone out of their way so many times to spend extra time with me throughout these last two years. I can’t say nothing but good things about them. Obviously as football players, but more importantly to me as people. They’ve been great. They’ve been my big brothers since the first day I walked in. I’m really thankful for those guys.”
How he thinks he’s grown since joining the Cowboys…
“In every way. I’ve learned a ton. I’ve gotten closer to these guys, gotten closer with the coaching staff. I’ve kind of learned a new way to see the game. Learned how different guys see the game. I think I’ve grown mentally and know myself better as a person.”
On what he wants from his next chapter…
“Just an opportunity, that’s the biggest thing. Just looking for an opportunity. We’ll see what happens. I haven’t got into the whole free agency thing or anything like that, but I know it’s going to be months around the corner. I’m going to take this and enjoy this day. Going to take some time to reflect on how grateful I am for the time that I spent here.”
