Devils Sign Former QMJHL Star To Three-Year Contract

The New Jersey Devils and Dawson Mercer have come to terms on a three-year, $12 million contract. This contract will see the former Drummondville Voltigeurs and Chicoutimi Sagueneens forward make $4 million a season.

Mercer has not missed a single NHL game since being inserted in the Devils lineup at the beginning of the 2021-22 season. Last season's 20 goals and 33 points was his worst statistical season with the Devils. But it was his 17-goal, 42-point rookie season and his 27-goal, 56-point sophomore season that helped him secure more money on his contract.

Mercer spent four seasons in QMJHL, finishing his career with 84 goals and 186 points in 194 games regular season games. He added another 12 goals and 37 points in 35 playoff games. He was drafted 8th overall by the Voltigeurs in the 2017 QMJHL draft and remained there until he was traded to the Chicoutimi Sagueneens in the middle of the 2019-20 campaign.

The Devils drafted the Newfoundland-born forward with the 18th overall pick in the 2020 NHL draft. Mercer and his team are expected to make a strong playoff push this season after both had a disappointing 2023-24 campaign. The start of the season gives them a chance to wipe the slate clean.
