Devils Q&A: 5 Random Questions With Jack Hughes
On the ice, New Jersey Devils star forward Jack Hughes is a magician. The 23-year-old can turn a game on its head and, on most nights, plays must-see hockey.
Off the ice, Hughes enjoys joking around with his teammates and is direct and minimalistic when handling his media availabilities.
After the team's Monday afternoon practice, The Hockey News quickly caught up with Hughes for a mini Q&A, during which he spoke about his love for the game, career trajectory, and more.
The Hockey News: Lisa Kudrow has publicly spoken about how it took a few years to settle into her Friends character, Phoebe Buffay. How long did it take you to get comfortable and understand what it takes to be an NHLer, day in and day out?
Jack Hughes: I don't know, honestly. Maybe my third year? Yeah, probably my third year.
THN: Is there a particular moment in your career that you would love to show to your younger self to say this is going to be you in the future?
Hughes: I hope that moment is still coming.
THN Follow-Up: It is not the 43 goals you scored in 2022-23?
Hughes: No, I hope to have more things ahead of that.
THN: Was there ever a moment in your career when you started to lose your love for the game?
Hughes: No
THN: What has hockey given you since you were drafted in 2019?
Hughes: A lot.
A lot of friends. Great memories. It is a lifetime goal to work towards.
THN: At this point, does hockey feel like a job to you, or is it still your passion that you have had since you were a kid?
Hughes: No, (it doesn't feel like a job). There are days when you enjoy it more than others, but I think my passion has probably been pretty consistent.
