Detroit Pistons Have to Ride the Subway to Make It to Brooklyn Game on Time: 'Only in New York'
The basketball team took the 3 train line to the Barclays Center — just like the rest of New York
The Detroit Pistons just commuted to work as any New Yorker would — by taking the subway.
On Sunday, Nov. 3, the basketball team took the New York City subway transit system to their 3:30 p.m. game at Barclays Center against the Brooklyn Nets, all due to the massive gridlock caused by the N.Y.C. Marathon.
The team's official Instagram account shared videos and photos from their relatable journey as the NBA players hopped on the 3 train line. "NYC Marathon took us on a detour…" an Instagram video's caption read.
The clip panned around the team on their way among other straphangers and followed the athletes eventually exiting the train, having to duck below the subway's threshold.
Another post featured the team huddled on subway benches "pulling up to Barclays Center New York-style." The Pistons also shared a selfie while waiting on the subway platform on X (formerly Twitter).
Fans were amused by the basketball team taking the city's public transit system. "Classic! Welcome to NYC!!!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽" one person wrote. "Hilarious 😂 only in NY," another said, with a third fan noting that the team was "getting that true NYC experience! 😍."

The New York City Marathon, which had over 50,000 people from all over the world running this year, closed down many major avenues throughout the five boroughs, which likely affected the Pistons' planned route to their Brooklyn match-up.

The Pistons won the game 106-92 against the Nets, causing fans to call for the team to take public transit for all of their games. "Subway might need to become a pre game ritual 👀," one fan posted.
"The Pistons are undefeated when they take the nyc subway," another joked. "Pistons win Detroit needs a subway immediately," a third said.
The Athletic predicted in October that the Pistons, who are a historically poor-performing team, will "exceed expectations" this upcoming season. They hadn't won a playoff game since 2008 and only made the playoffs three times in the last 15 years.
The 3 train just might change that.
