Democrats in Canada use Trump–Clinton debate to recruit in Winnipeg

Jennifer Carpenter is a member of Democrats Abroad, an international group that helps U.S. citizens living in other countries vote in elections.

She said there are about 300 registered Democrats in Winnipeg, and more signing up all the time since Trump won the Republican nomination.

According to Carpenter Trump has "really tapped into that group of Americans that is feeling very left behind and feeling that no one represents them." She also says Trump is media savvy and it's helping him a lot.

'He's figured out how to work the news cycle'

"Donald Trump makes good news. He's figured out how to work the news cycle … things are just forgotten or overlooked, and then we move onto the next [story]."

Carpenter added that Trump is not only dominating the news but her conversations with friends.

"It's funny, this is what I talk about with my Canadian friends all the time, we just have drinks and talk politics, and [a Trump presidency] is unfathomable for everyone."

When asked about the outcome she's hoping for, Carpenter said, "I am really hoping that Hillary will come across exactly as she is, you know, knowledgeable, experienced, wise about domestic and international affairs."

Carpenter also thinks the debate will be a wake-up call for Republicans. "I don't think [the debate] will change things for Donald Trump's base, but I do think it will change things for lifelong Republicans who are moderate and reasonable."

There will also be a table at the viewing party Monday night where U.S. citizens living in Winnipeg can register to cast an absentee ballot.

Carpenter says, for the sake of her birth country, she hopes what they're doing can help prevent a Trump presidency.
