DeMarcus Walker explains how Mike Vrabel would fix Bears locker room

With the Chicago Bears concluding their 2024 season with a win over their bitter rival Green Bay Packers, the focus now turns to the offseason, headlined by the search for the team's next head coach.

There has already been a firestorm of names being attached to the Bears vacancy, one of the most discussed names is former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel, who has some experience with players currently on the Bears roster.

During the team's exit interviews on Monday, defensive end DeMarcus Walker, who played one season for Vrabel with the Titans in 2022, had some precise words when asked about his former head coach. With many names being thrown around as the next potential head coach, Walker, as well as safety and team captain Kevin Byard, have had quite the praise for Vrabel.

When he was asked about his old coach, Walker said that Vrabel would cut out a lot of the nonsense around the team and would hold everyone accountable for their play and actions.

“A lot of bull— is going to be cut out," Walker said. "I’m sorry, but that’s true. Discipline will be laid right down from the first day. A lot of those small things that we were doing and got away with, that won’t happen. Just from my personal experience.”

Following the dismissal of Matt Eberflus after a loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving, one of the biggest narratives was changing the culture inside the locker room. Players had wanted Eberflus and former offensive coordinator Shane Waldron to coach them "tougher," and then interim head coach Thomas Brown came in and sounded like he was ready to do that part. Many players discussed the immediate change they felt when Brown entered the locker room, unfortunately for Brown, the results on the field weren't there.

Vrabel has a reputation for being as tough of a coach as he was a player who won three Super Bowl championships in New England. During his tenure with the Titans, Vrabel got the most out of quarterback Ryan Tannehill during his career resurgence, including three playoff appearances, headlined by an AFC Championship appearance in 2021.

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Vrabel said he's focused on three keys for his next head coaching job: ownership, collaboration, and quarterback, all of which have been a discussion point in Chicago.

The public consensus has been Vrabel and Ben Johnson are the leading candidates to be the next Bears coach, and if Walker knows anything, he knows that there will be accountability, discipline, and no nonsense if his old coach arrives in Chicago.
