Deion Sanders, Nike reunite for Air Diamond Turf sneakers: 'Nothing is new under the sun'
NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders' signature Air Nike Diamond Turf sneakers are back now that he and the sneaker maker have reconciled and agreed to continue their relationship after years of not seeing eye to eye.
The Air Diamond Turf shoe was released online Friday at 10 a.m. ET for $150 on Nike's website. As of Friday afternoon, the sneakers were sold out on the Nike site and at several other shoe retailers including Finish Line and Sneaker Politics.
"The Air Diamond Turf takes the iconic cross trainer from 1994 and gives it a street-ready refresh," Nike's description for the sneaker says. "This version features Air units in the heel and forefoot, plus durable leather and a midfoot strap for a secure fit. And that colorway? Same as the original."
Nike confirmed the reunion with Sanders, who is now the head football coach at the University of Colorado, in 2023 in an email to USA TODAY Sports. “We welcome Deion Sanders back to the Nike family,” the company said in a statement at the time.
Deion Sanders on his Nike Air Diamond Turf 'Sellout'
In an Instagram post on Friday, Sanders shared a picture of him wearing the sneakers with the caption, "Nothing is new under the sun, I rocked these PRIMES’ & #24 at the Pro Bowl waaay back when. I also heard from @nike that I sold out and I’m sure they weren’t saying imma 'Sellout' they were talking about me 'Selling Out' ! Think about that baby! I’m PRIME! REAL since u 1st heard of ya boy! #CoachPrime."
Why were Deion Sanders and Nike at odds?
Sanders and Nike were at odds for years with the former Atlanta Falcon and Dallas Cowboy telling Complex's Joe La Puma in 2017 that he was "upset with them right now."
"We created these together, but they don’t want to seed me. They don’t want to direct deposit," Sanders told La Puma during the interview.
Sanders' issues with Nike continued into 2019 when he was a guest on a former Complex-owned sneaker talk show, Full Size Run. His gripe with Nike this time stemmed from them not helping fund youth sports leagues, which is something rival brand Under Armour was doing, Sanders said.
“I’ve got to have a plan to sustain the shorties, with the youth leagues and all that, and they weren’t with it,” Sanders said on Full Size Run. “You’ve got to be careful how you treat people because you never know,” he said.
Although Sanders signed with Nike in 1992, he said he's never met Phil Knight, Nike's co-founder and former CEO.
What are Deion Sanders Nike Air Diamond Turf sneakers reselling for?
Since the Air Diamond Turf sneakers are sold out, those looking to grab a pair will have to pay resell prices for them.
Flight Club, a consignment sneaker retailer, is selling the sneakers for more than $200, depending on the size.
Goat and Stock X, both popular online sneaker resell marketplaces, have the Air Diamond Turf sneakers for prices ranging from about $200 to a little over $600, depending on the size.
