How Declan Doyle plans to help Ben Johnson with Bears offense
New Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle spoke with the media for the first time on Thursday, where he discussed what he plans to bring to the team's offense.
Led by quarterback Caleb Williams, who showed plenty of potential in a very disappointing season for the team in 2024, the offensive coaching staff with head coach Ben Johnson and Doyle as offensive coordinator will be tasked with getting the Bears unit to be a premier offensive threat.
Looking at himself more as a resource than anything, Doyle knows his job will be to organize and detail the team's game plan week in and week out, as he serves as the right hand man to the head coach, offensively speaking.
With Johnson going from offensive coordinator in Detroit to head coach in Chicago, he'll have more responsibilities and duties -- and less time to focus on just the offense -- so his chemistry with Doyle will be of utmost importance and there's going to need to be a level of "trust."
"My job is going to be to organize and detail the game plan," Doyle told reporters Thursday.
Despite not having the role or ability to call plays, as that responsibility will fall on the head coach, Doyle believes he can be a resource to the offensive players on the team.
"My goal is to be supportive as possible and be a resource for our players," Doyle said.
Doyle will have plenty of responsibility and power on the Bears coaching staff, but he'll also have a chance to continue growing his knowledge as he rises through NFL coaching ranks. After learning from Sean Payton in his previous stops, Doyle will now learn from one of the highest-regarded play callers in Johnson.
