Dayton Moore admits he took satisfaction in winning World Series with Rangers

Dayton Moore wasn’t without a job for long after he was fired by the Royals late in the 2022 season. A former Royals player made sure of that.

Texas Rangers general manager Chris Young hired Moore as a senior advisor just a couple of months after the Royals parted ways with Moore.

Less than a year after that, Young and Moore were celebrating the Rangers’ World Series championship. It was the first Rangers’ World Series title, and Moore admitted he savored it.

“Well, it was awesome,” Moore said Friday. “I’m just so thankful that C.Y. allowed me to to be a part of his journey. And, of course, it brought back so many great memories of our time here in Kansas City. Honestly, I was able to enjoy it a little bit more. Sad to say, my own character flaw, but it brought back a lot of great memories truthfully, so it was pretty neat.”

Moore got the third World Series ring of his career. He was a scout when the Braves won in 1995 and general manager with the Royals 20 years later.

“I’ve been fortunate to be part of three and in three different roles,” Moore noted.

A close relationship

Young was hired as the Rangers’ general manager in 2020, three years after his playing days ended. Young was designated for assignment by the Royals in 2017. Moore was the one who cut Young.

But Moore didn’t simply call Young with that news.

“I said come meet me at my house,” Moore said in 2017 after Young was DFA’d. “We sat and discussed it. It was hard, but it was the right thing to do. C.Y., as I told him, he was perhaps in my mind, the MVP of our pitching staff in 2015. He did everything for us. He was one of the pillars of our team.

“I know that I’m a better person for being around him, and I know our organization is better. He’s somebody truthfully that I’d like to partner with in the future in whatever endeavor.”

Those words proved to be prophetic.

Moore, who was at Kauffman Stadium on Friday when the team put former GM John Schuerholz in its Hall of Fame, recalled that 2017 meeting with Young.

“I think that’s just the human part of it that I think is really important: To be present,” Moore said. “And the players work so hard, they sacrifice so much. And I think it’s important to give him the necessary time when and if that day comes and so that’s how I was raised with John Schuerholz.”
