No. 1 Gunter runs away with third-straight title by thumping Woodville

Gunter broke open a close game at the half, with the help of a record-setting kickoff return by senior Mitchell Gage, to down Woodville 28-0 in the Class 3A Division Two title game before a crowd of 9,531.

Gage took the opening kickoff of the second half and raced 96 yards for a touchdown to set a Class 3A championship-game record. Previously the longest kickoff return in 3A was 90 yards by Steve Herron of Rotan against Ingleside in 1962.

It was the second-longest return in any classification, only behind a pair of 97-yard returns. John Kleinert of Austin Reagan did it against Abilene Cooper in 1967, considered a 6A record, and a 5A mark by Kam Scott of Manvel against Highland Park in 2017.
