Class 6A DII: Southlake Carroll can’t complete comeback against Vandegrift

Southlake Carroll had several opportunities to get back in the game in the second half, but a squandered chance to score late and untimely turnovers doomed the Dragons as Austin Vandegrift won its first state title 24-17 before 26,247 watching at AT&T Stadium.

Carroll wide receiver Brock Boyd pulled the Dragons to within 21-14 with 10:28 left in the third quarter on a 23-yard scoring pass from Angelo Renda, but the Dragons could only muster a 47-yard field goal by Gavin Strange with one second left in the game the rest of the way.

Brock Boyd had 13 receptions for 178 yards in the game, falling one reception short of tying the 11-man all-classes and Class 6A record of 14. Brock Boyd moved ahead of his brother Brady Boyd who had 12 receptions against Austin Westlake in 2020.
