David Ross busts a move on 'Dancing with the Stars' and it's a little weird

“Dancing with the Stars” broadcast its second episode on Monday night, and you’ll be delighted to know that retired Chicago Cubs back-up catcher David Ross was not eliminated, and lived to dance another day.

And did he ever dance. In episode 2 on Monday night, Ross and his partner Lindsay Arnold did the cha-cha-cha to… Young MC’s “Bust a Move?” Did that really happen? Yes. Yes it did.

The first thing anyone should say about this performance is that David Ross is having more fun than anyone should be be allowed to have. He’s out there wearing sparkly Hammer pants and doing a modified cha-cha-cha with some “break dancing” at the end. Oh, did you miss that part? Well don’t worry, you can watch it right here!

Feel weird yet? Because that’s weird. But it’s so, so fun. David’s dance isn’t quite as sharp as it was with last week’s quickstep, and there’s a lot of pelvic thrusting, but some of that could be the very strange combination of music and dance style. They’re doing a cha-cha to “Bust a Move,” which works rhythmically, but just doesn’t really jive.

But at the very end, after Ross busts a move and he’s laid out on the floor smiling at the camera, he completely dissolves in laughter.

He cannot believe what he just did. The judges were similarly disbelieving, but mostly because of the slightly cringey quality of his dance.

David scored a 27/40, which wasn’t the lowest score of the night, but he’s in the bottom three. Mr. T and Nick Viall both had worse scores, but he’s not safe yet. (You can read about all the dances on YahooTV’s recap of episode 2 of “Dancing with the Stars.”) Scores from the judges are combined with viewer votes to determine who goes home every week, so we’ll have to wait and see if Ross survives to dance another week.
