David Ortiz becomes oldest player to hit 30 home runs in a season

David Ortiz isn't ending his major league career quietly.

On Wednesday night, the 40-year-old slugger etched his name in the history books again by becoming the oldest MLB player to hit 30 home runs in a season.

"We need that, we need offence," Ortiz said. "We've had a good offence this year and that's what's keeping us alive, so hopefully it continues."

Ortiz drilled a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Red Sox an early advantage in Tampa Bay and his 100th RBI of the season, but the Rays came back from a three-run deficit to beat Boston 4-3 in 11 innings.

It is the 10th time in his career that he has managed to hit 30 home runs and collect 100 RBIs, which is a Red Sox franchise record.

The MLB veteran announced his impending retirement late last year on his 40th birthday and has since continued to climb up the all-time career home runs list. With his 533rd tonight, he is just one behind Jimmie Foxx, who occupies the 18th spot.
