Davante Adams trade rumors: Raiders WR reportedly prefers to be traded

Davante Adams' time with the Las Vegas Raiders may soon be coming to an end.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Adams has informed the team that "he prefers to be traded. "

"There is nothing imminent," Rapoport wrote of an Adams trade in the social media post revealing the news, while NFL Network's Mike Garafolo noted the request "lays the groundwork for an eventual split."

Meanwhile, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Raiders would "consider" trading Adams for a package that includes a second-round pick and other assets.

Davante Adams trade request

Adams' reported request comes just a day after an Instagram account linked to Raiders coach Antonio Pierce liked a post indicating the team would trade the veteran receiver for the right package.

Adams was asked about the situation in an appearance on Kay Adams' "Up and Adams" show on FanDuel TV. He detailed that he hadn't spoken to Pierce about the post and was mum about his future with the Raiders.

"All I can control is this talk we're having right here," the Raiders wide-out said, referring to his appearance on the show. "After we're done with this, all I control is the next thing I'm going to do."

Adams becomes one of the more intriguing trade candidates available in the NFL. The only hurdles for a deal will be his health and his contract.

Davante Adams injury update

Adams missed the Raiders' 20-16 win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 4 because of a hamstring injury. His recovery is deemed "week-to-week," so it doesn't seem like a long-term injury.

In the season's first three games, Adams logged 18 catches for 209 yards and a touchdown while serving as Gardner Minshew's No. 1 target. He showed no ill effects from his hamstring malady in those contests.

Davante Adams contract details

Adams is in the third year of a five-year, $140 million contract he signed with the Raiders in 2022.

Any team acquiring Adams would be responsible for paying the prorated remainder of his $16.89 million base salary for the 2024 NFL season. They would also be on the hook for his $35.64 million base salaries in 2025 and 2026, though those are not guaranteed. Adams' salary decreases by $938,333 every game he plays with Las Vegas.

If traded, the Raiders would incur a dead-money charge of $7.85 million in 2024 and $15.7 million in 2025.

In all likelihood, any team acquiring Adams would sign him to an extension or restructure his contract to defray his future salary cap numbers. As such, some mathematical gymnastics may be involved in moving Adams, especially if he goes to a team lacking salary cap space for the 2024 season.
