Austin Dillon will have another new crew chief in 2019.

Richard Childress Racing announced Monday that Danny Stockman would take over as Dillon’s crew chief next season. Stockman spent the 2018 season as Daniel Hemric’s crew chief in the Xfinity Series. You may remember him as the crew chief who Fox captured vaping atop the pit box at Michigan over the summer.

Stockman and Dillon have worked together before in the Truck Series and the Xfinity Series. Stockman was Dillon’s crew chief in 2011 when he won the Truck Series title and in 2013 when he won the Xfinity Series title. Dillon is just one of three drivers who have won titles in both series.

Dillon hasn’t come close to winning a Cup Series title in his five years at NASCAR’s top level, however. And maybe that’s why Stockman will be his fourth full-time crew chief in six seasons. Dillon’s first crew chief was Gil Martin. He was replaced by Slugger Labbe. He was replaced by Justin Alexander, who served as Dillon’s crew chief for the second half of the 2017 season and the entirety of the 2018 season.

Dillon finished 13th in the points standings in 2018. He made the playoffs through his win in the season-opening Daytona 500 where he took the lead on the last lap after contact with Aric Almirola.
