Dan Orlovsky: Why Mike McCarthy is better fit for Bears than Ben Johnson
There has been plenty of speculation about the Chicago Bears' next move as they search for their new head coach. The latest rumor circling the mill is that the now former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is a serious contender to be the next head coach of the Bears, who he's expected to interview with on Wednesday.
A week ago, the Bears requested, and then were denied, permission from the Cowboys to speak to McCarthy. But now that he's a free agent coach, the process has moved quickly. Many members of the NFL media world have chimed in on McCarthy's next destination, with one ESPN analyst believing that he fits very well in Chicago.
Speaking on the Monday Night Football pregame show, Dan Orlovsky believes that not only is McCarthy a good fit, but he's a better fit than Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who has been the most popular name during the search.
"I would be very interested if I was the Chicago Bears," Orlovsky said. "I have felt for two weeks now, I actually prefer Mike McCarthy in Chicago over Ben Johnson, that doesn't mean anything negative about Ben Johnson. Number one, Mike McCarthy is a great leader, that's been established. Number two, he's been there and done that. Number three, he has a track record of developing quarterbacks in structure."
Crediting the work that he has done with Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott in Green Bay and Dallas, respectively, Orlovsky believes that McCarthy would come in and work well with Caleb Williams who showed plenty of potential in his first year despite a lost season.
Not only the history he has in developing quarterbacks, but the structure and continued regular season success McCarthy has had would make him an instant upgrade in the Bears locker room. Chicago showed interest early in the process and were denied, but now we should get a better idea of the mutual interest between both parties.
