Dallas Cowboys reportedly adding 1,000-yard rusher to running back group

The Dallas Cowboys are adding to their stable of running backs.

The Cowboys have reportedly added free agent running back Dalvin Cook to their practice squad.

Cook joins a running back group headed by Ezekiel Elliott, who returns to the Cowboys after a season with the New England Patriots. Dallas’ 53-man initial roster also includes returning backs Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn and fullback Hunter Luepke.

Cook spent the 2023 season with the New York Jets and Baltiomre Ravens. He played in 15 games for the Jets, rushing for 214 yards. After joining the Ravens late in the season, he rushed for 23 yards against Houston in the AFC divisional round. He did not play against Kansas City in the AFC Championship game.

As a member of the practice squad, Cook could be elevated to the game-day roster for the opener on Sept. 8 at Cleveland. NFL rules allow practice squad members to be added to the game-day roster three times during the season before they must be added to the roster permanently or be released.

Cook was originally drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the second round of the 2017 draft. He had four consecutive 1,000-plus yard seasons and has 6,207 rushing yards and 47 rushing touchdowns, plus 1,872 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns. He’s the third-leading rusher in Vikings history.

Several media outlets, including ESPN, reported the Cowboys’ interest in Cook.
