Dallas Cowboys release troubled receiver Antonio Calloway following weekend arrest

The Dallas Cowboys did the expected on Monday when they released receiver Antonio Callaway on Monday, two days after his arrest in Miami.

The Cowboys signed fourth-year receiver Tyron Johnson to fill his roster spot.

Callaway, who had a warrant for driving with a suspended license, signed with the Cowboys’ practice squad Nov. 15.

He was never signed to the active roster but the Cowboys signed him to a futures contract in January for the 2023 season in hopes of finally tapping into the talent that made Calloway a fourth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2018.

His career has been checkered ever since, including two separate four games suspensions and a 10-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

In 25 career games, including 14 starts, Callaway has 53 receptions for 695 yards and five touchdowns.

But Callaway hadn’t played in a regular-season game since 2020 when he appeared in five games for the Dolphins.

The Cowboys gave him a chance to sit and develop.

Now that opportunity is gone.

Johnson, who was cut the San Francisco 49ers last month, started his NFL career with the Houston Texans in 2019.

He has also had stints with the Los Angeles Chargers, Jacksonville Jaguars and Las Vegas Raiders. He has appeared in 26 games with just one start, recording 23 receptions for 442 yards and three touchdowns.
