Dak Prescott updates recovery from torn hamstring and gives support for retaining Mike McCarthy

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, left, and head coach Mike McCarthy talk before the start of the game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2024, at AT&T Stadium. Prescott is on the injured reserve list after he suffered a hamstring injury in the team’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Nov. 3.

It’s been far from an ideal season for the Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott.

And it was far from an ideal day in opponent territory on Sunday as all Prescott could do was watch as the Cowboys fell to the Philadelphia Eagles 41-7 in an NFC East-clinching victory that officially put Dallas under .500 for the season.

Prescott, who saw his season end with a torn hamstring in a week nine loss to the Atlanta Falcons, has continued to travel with the team and provide support in meetings and up in the coaches’ booth during games. On Sunday, he was seen walking the sideline in pregame, losing the crutches he has been using for support in recent weeks.

“Gained some strength in it, started to use it a little bit,” Prescott said about his surgically repaired hamstring. “I’m probably a few weeks, maybe a month, from running. Got on the bike, so definitely doing some things, moving more.”

It hasn’t been easy for Prescott seeing the Cowboys’ season end prematurely after a disappointing year will see him and his team watch from the sidelines when the postseason kicks off in a couple of weeks. Even with it, Prescott has continued to provide support where he can.

“Very tough, very frustrating,” he said. “Especially in a place like this, besides AT&T [Stadium], my favorite place to play football. The fans, the environment, I miss it...[I’m] supporting the teammates, staying in the game and seeing it from a different view up there in the booth. Getting a little bit of the coaches’ information and how they talk throughout the game, just getting a different view of it.”

On the topic of coaches, Prescott has already publicly voiced his support for head coach Mike McCarthy to return in 2025 despite this being the final season in a five-year contract with the team. While he hasn’t yet spoken to owner and general manager Jerry Jones about it yet, he plans to before a decision is made.

“Obviously, I’m promoting bringing him back,” Prescott said. “It’s hard to do your job with all of that hanging over your head. Credit to his professionalism, and his coaching style of getting guys ready to play and go out there and finish.”

Prescott is expected to be cleared in April ahead of organized team activities for the team happen in late May, according to a team source. In his eight games this season, Prescott threw for 1,978 yards and 11 touchdowns.
