National League side Dagenham & Redbridge have sacked manager Ben Strevens following their Boxing Day defeat by Braintree Town.

A former striker for the club, the 44-year-old took over as manager in March 2023 after predecessor Daryl McMahon was sacked the previous month.

He steered them to a 10th-placed finish in the National League by the end of 2022-23 and 15th last season, but he has overseen just seven wins from 23 league fixtures this term, with the Daggers currently five points above the relegation zone.

Assistant boss Lewis Young will take charge of the team on a temporary basis while the club look for Strevens' replacement.

"No time scale has been put on this recruitment process, but rest assured this will start immediately," a club statement said.

"In the meantime, we would urge all supporters to give Lewis and the team your full support."

Despite masterminding FA Cup upsets against Crewe Alexandra and AFC Wimbledon this season in order to set up a visit to Championship side Millwall in this season's third round, other results have been disappointing.

The club were knocked out of the FA Trophy by Southern League Premier Division South side Chertsey Town earlier in December and they have picked up just two wins from their past nine National League games.
