Food banks canada warning and it's annual poverty report card we reached a critical point as poverty and food insecurity worsens in every corner of the country. Canada received a d. Mack minus grade, 2 provinces and -- nova scotia and P.E.I. managed to improve their grades while the rest of the country remained stagnant. Or got worse. The report found more than 44 set map of people are feeling worse off when compared to last year. The percentage of people paying more than 30% of their income on housing hit 43.6% and 2024. Trisha thank you for joining me. Are you surprised by the new report from food bank canada? >> Sadly no. Here and ottawa the rates for food insecurity have been climbing high. Right now, 1 and 7 households in ottawa report experiencing food insecurity. In 2017 the number was 1 in 16. >> Tell us what kind of factors are contributed to the rise in food insecurity? >> The main factor is that it's a symptom of poverty. People are struggling to afford the basics including food and shelter appeared so really having enough money to report basic needs is really the root cause of food insecurity. >> It seems everywhere you go you can't really stick -- speak to anyone without talking about how expensive it is to get by and live. How expensive brand is, bills. What effect -- what steps are needed to reduce the number of people struggling with food insecurity? >> Certainly 1 thing that's being called for is prioritizing and taking action on poverty reduction plans. Again, actions that can help make sure people have the income they need to afford the basics

of living a healthy and dignified life. Here at the ottawa food bank our community has been extremely generous in terms of donating food and funds but we really need collective sustained support from all levels of government to make a lasting change. >> Dew you fear this is a situation considering the report today showing a grade of d minus that this will only get worse before it gets better? >> Repeat the question, please. >> You think it's a situation that will only get worse before it gets better? >> I think it depends on the action that is taken. We are called in for governments to work collectively to address the issues on a policy level. Community is really doing as much as I can and terms of being generous and contributing what I can to help people. But certainly governments at all levels really need to work together to address policies that are keeping people in poverty. >> And very concerning trend. The majority feel the prices are still climbing. 29% of people surveyed lame the rising cost of grocery chains. Something city council has long asked for as well as our community partners. >> Reporter: 2 women here say people are filling up the paperwork to move on but securing a place is tough to finalize. >> They are coming here to say okay today is moving day. >> Answer or they never come to take you to see the place or check it out if you want to. >> Reporter: the gentle approach the city says has been successful at allan gardens. Last july they were 84 in catton's and now there are only 9. But this outreach worker is disappointed. >> They request years ago said people need self -- safe resources but nunavut recommends any of that. So it mainly focuses on people that they will be cleared if they don't accept the shelter option. >> Reporter: until the issues are addressed more of the housing and services are available in cabinets keep popping appeared beth mcdonnell ctv news madd westjet is going for a fellow federal government review.
