I choose you. Farming for love on ctv >> This report isn't necessarily a surprise to us, but just a depth of need right across the country that unfortunately is not being met with the sense of urgency. Canada has reached a critical turning point as more people are struggling with poverty and food insecurity. >> Well, police investigate a stabbing that left 3 young men dead. >> It didn't start and in for tuesday, bryant. >> And historic recognition, ireland, norway and spain plan to formally recognize a palestinian state. A move. Israel welcomed by hamas. Hello, I'm marcia macmillan. We're going go straight this hour to montreal police. They're providing an update on a fatal stabbing last night in the city. >> 3 young men are dead. Let's listen. >> Comes every part of that vision times to see somebody rd heard or found out yesterday evening, there was an incident that occurred in touch home or right option the city. And then mickey fox, it was mentioned that it was a sudden event that is not these related to organized crime some m or any incidents that occurred in recent weeks. It's a conflict that he generated and unfortunately led to the death of 3 people that that is sent to kay, including a 15 year-old teenager. The 5th on this is a summary of the facts. No, the the deal. We're still watching surveillance video it meeting with witnesses collecting evidence that we have and we have closed the crime scene that I just simple, it's free. And we from those details and probably able to find out in the next few hours or days. The able to tell you exactly what happened and what was the chain of events on the vision for the time being. We already have a good idea, but we will be continuing to look at the details to continue the investigation. I'm not accusing so in addition to the 3 victims of could every other people involved don't answer. This is a conflict that involved about 15 people to the town needs to mend easy. We're trying now to determine the involvement at each of those people you thefts. And so this is the but in fact, the people who did die, we're participating in the conflict, just keep the fed. So we're also trying to look at who did watch because it's a complex situations you predict before going down awesome. And so for going to inform the public, we need to look at all video and surveillance footage to find out exactly what happened was to call it out. But I could say that that's a possibility. We're looking at right now. >> O come on for this is a mess of this. Is that in mind? A message for the 6 cities it answer, we're not coming. And sitting on that, that incident that we can say that they're people that know each other to the point is we can not state whether they were known to police are not good news, but these are people who knew each other. >> Simon touchable question months. It took time to with that. I know that you can off all the new. I have to say that it's been a lot of work and we've been working a lot over the last 15 days. But if we exclude yesterday's event becoming the >> At was I just asked and we had 4 homicides and 3 arrests that were made recently. And so these are we are very satisfied with those results in a second to see. We've moved forward a lot in each of the cases in the investigators have worked really well that snow that and that's what allowed us to proceed to rest quickly and get on stuff like that. He's so I'm sending out the message that no violence will be tolerated here in montreal. And so we have all the energy you need to be able to go after and arrest the and before the courts. And so we will do the same thing with yesterday's incident. We will see this through to the end to the home of sunday. And this will be based on the quality of the evidence received. So this is spending an circle sounds asia, 70 them and and the the method that you can again see if these murders would have been related to organized crime, whether they were the territory, conflicts or street gangs, conflict doesn't sit leggett's, which is often the case when there are multiple homicides. I would have told you that no need to end up with a snow job didn't. But right now we're not really seeing that it's that type of event that on seaspan nicole, we often need

to look at these crimes and one by one. And oftentimes conflicts among a group of people degenerate. And unfortunately, that's the circumstances that we're seeing here to see, you know, kind of but we're not seeing a rise and that there was one previously that did involve a firearm for that, 6 not out there, not something. And that is some of the evidence that we have. We need to look at all of the incidents that have happened just within 5 to 10 times or with firearms and but conflicts often just eat and rain in are not planned. Inaudible question. Students are bused deal meant that could be a possibility. And we're putting a lot of pressure on the environment with a different address that we have made. And especially when connected with firearms. Huge windy stecich. But most a little bit more difficult to matt. Thank you. Festival falls forest a mess. And if people sometimes arcked or defend themselves menus. And as of 2 where hospitals were, as I'm able to save certain people that they have to say an enormous amount of people surveyed use of to present. Yeah, you saw the meadows often hospitals can save those people, but unfortunately, that was not the case yesterday. It's also his arm after the school that and so we are putting pressure on a firearms because we want fair and violence single down in montreal. As you mentioned, we have seen some results, but I would say that that's the situation that we're in, that you never know what. So sometimes we need to take a step back before we can move forward in these cases. No says see them at and soon. Nothing michael. No, no, we don't have that information that indicates that it is time to not do that. This seems to have been a personal conflicts. We don't know all the details by the minute. Several people were gathered on monday. Some think it, but unfortunately, not everyone call this a proper. It's what police you'll understand, this is so currently what I can tell you is that this was not a gang conflict. This was a personal conflict that unfortunately degenerated to the death of 3 people. Question, what would you tell the public respects to these homicides that have been occurring? It also has a security ties on. I would say that montreal is safe. If we compare to other cities in canada and the united states. Montreal is a very safe and we a good trauma side bait with an a fast and loose. It is concerning to see a number of them in such a short time. But what I can tell the people of montreal just ask you, is that you just want to keep in the incidence of last week. We have proceeded to arrest us to, of all people will go to jail for what they have done last time to the nasdaq type of this. And we are conducting all investigations to ensure to ensure that these criminals are brought to justice as soon as possible. And so my message is that violence in montreal will not be tolerated on the and despair. I mean. All you can answer one of the suspects was armed us my mind and no one has been detained at this time. Yes, that's still not. I know that we spoke about ever is that an arrest, but that is not related to yesterday's event. Nasa astronaut full sea ice with and at the pit stop, it was an arrest stall on the president is that still need to verify that story, but it's not at all related to yesterday's incident. So the magnificence answers to see the rest of the giants to mecca on the time. There are suspects in this case, but we're in the process is watching all the videos as we have not been able to see all the evidence that, but we will keep the public informed on the number of people who participate in the we will look at all the evidence before we can communicate that information. Okay. Is that says it's or decision was answer. 15 year old is definitely young. We have had young people that involved, but a 15 year-old is difficult to accept. Yeah, but you do if you knew these effects on >> In addition to or outside of domestic. The 2 incidents when it comes to the streets, crime, it's quite rare to see a 15 year-old involved. Janessa will have only police found one answer. I'll be able to answer later. But right now we don't have that information because we're still investigating this, the best place for people to answer that unfortunately have to seize. And so we will try to use other

means to try and understand the entire situation. Inaudible question. The funding. That's nothing to be saying that. Are you talking that the murder of mister from saint johner yes, we are following that. We're aware of it. The market and we're investigating that file just as we do with the others. That's not nicole were aware of the dynamics of conflict when it comes to games that secured him, but it would be wrong to say at this point that there's an escalation of that. >> Use and matt, if we look at the entire situation, words cannot. Kenzie, there are just the 6 murders through organized crime since the beginning of the year. So that's not so bad overall, not that. So we could not say that there's an and yes, fortunately when it comes to summer, it's always a gas was effected sic of some of the new organized crime is always very unpredictable. Just shows us awful but talking and it would be incorrect to say that it also might be says is so high on the cause of us are on the ground, were aware of the situation and we're putting pressure on the environment. We have intelligence, that's a very active when she was and we're going to try and have today com U.S. summer possible that you have any questions. I'm going to try. So yesterday sir, about all that to gangs. >> Around 15 16 person the where we're there and is in a fight that was a hunt for tonight's event. That was not from anything and the person were there. >> I certainly doesn't come free with the police and the opp 3 victims. So was so looking for. >> All in all the people that we re that we have in the fight to know exactly what's happening yesterday with still looking videos. And terry, to some people and doing that. They weren't to check out bc has some video, some information about its just to be sure that we understand all that the events happening yet. At right now is to she is too short to on was nothing to get too soon yet to that, you know, what's happening exactly was that the killing, maybe there's no maybe songs, but for sure, the person knows the chargers, but we don't know exactly right now. What's that what's to come for we're about. What needs >> So it wasn't funny when it's >> To fund the sun. It's probably right now was so looking for the person where they're yesterday. We have a good idea. Some person on the job, but we don't know all the person where they're so we're still looking for all the person enough to do any possible to say exactly what's out. Let's talk about. >> And maybe add more detail about the connection, the building with that person and the gang. We don't have like that a gang. Yeah, street gang that we know. >> It's not, it's not up to to, we don't check it out right now on that. >> Of homicides concerning news >> Yeah, I said in we we put a lot of questions the firearms. We doing a lot of site preparation and search warrants and their station just to be sure that does in trees. Yesterday and all the others except the one on the me 14, that was, it was nice. That's approves like it's not always for me to take some things that is like that comes to daken's its goes around in treason after you do want us to do with the nice, for the farm is not over. And we are going to continue to do it. It's pretty difficult to see something about that tonight. That's more teenager or a person is constrained? That's where we are. >> Yeah, for sure. But the cba say for sure by 7 is a we're

not in increased eason's firearms, things like that. It's is elite. >> And 4th street that for teachers to even. >> Montreal is free. Say when you compare with all that in the town in months and the canada and united states, it's pretty safe like we to millions of people and we're around like that. 25 30 35 murder, it's too much. But when you come as with other cities, precincts. >> Is that we have 6, I'm aside related to suit the argos crime this year. So 10 is not. >> Unlike the 7 consistent with >> All right, we're getting in as todays from montreal police on a fatal stabbing last night in the city. Police say that they have suspects, but no arrests have been made after 3 young men died from stab wounds in the city of montreal. The ages 15 21 23 police believe that they all knew each other, but they say this was not a street gang. Now police are now watching surveillance video and interviewing witnesses. They believe that about 15 people were involved. It brings montreal's homicide rate up to 16 this year. Police say that the public needs to know the city is still considered safe, especially given the size of the big city. The city of montreal will take a short break. We're going to come back with more on that. >> Increasing in canada and the latest on a poverty report CARD(Snickering) Hanging tree Let's go for a skate, and a little chat. Food banks, canada warns that we've reached a critical turning point as poverty and food insecurity worsens in just about every corner of this country. Canada overall received it grade of d minus. That's a decline from d last year just to provinces. Nova scotia and prince edward island managed to increase their overall grades while the rest of the country remain stagnant or got worse. Ctv's renee rodgers has been looking at the report today. She joins us now. So what a break down the numbers for us. >> I'm marcia. Well, yes, this is a comprehensive look at food insecurity and poverty right across canada. In fact, I'll show you just how thick this document is an essentially it breaks down of poverty across canada that looks at each province in particular. And yes, you are right our grade across canada has been downgraded from d 2 d minus signalling that people are a broadly worse off than they were. >> Back in 2023, you can see on the map there most scored a d minus with that pei and nova scotia improving their thanks to some in proved legislative focus on poverty reduction over the past year. But when it comes to why, why the decline? Well, almost half of canadians are 44%. Marcia say they feel financially worse off compared to last year. Another point more people are spending over 30% of their income on housing. And here's another one for you. More people who receive government support say it's not enough to keep up with the cost of living. So really these issues across canada are very widespread and food banks canada says you can just expect things to get worse. So who earn a is visiting a food bank? Most oft. Food banks, canada has summit data on that. First off, they say you can expect a 30% increase in the use of food banks this year compared to last year, who's using them while a 3rd are children just over 40 per partner just under 44% are single adult households about 42% are people who are on social assistance or disability related supports one in 6 are currently employed and 8% of food bank clients are food banks, canada has 27 policy recommendations focusing on improving supports for people in need working towards more affordable housing and addressing food insecurity and poverty in northern and remote areas. It's making these recommendations in the hope that next year, the score will improve. Alright renee, thank you for that this morning. We're also getting a better sense of how canadians feel about the state of grocery prices in canada. >> The majority of us believe costs are still climbing at about a quarter. Believe that the grocery chains are to blame. A new leger poll found 64% of those surveyed feel the rate of inflation at grocery stores is just getting worse. 6% thought things were maybe getting better. 25% feel it's about the same bnn bloomberg's paul bagnell is joining us now with more on this. All the numbers are not good when it comes to our feelings towards what we're spending at the store. No. And it shows you, marcia, that the, I think the big grocery retailers continue to have a public relations. >> Problem on their on their hands. As you've just said, people believe >> That food prices are still soaring and they blame the

grocery retailers for those price increases. The the believe think the fact the belief. That's a fair food inflation is getting worse. Allege a report specifically almost two-thirds of canadians. 64% feel as though the rate of inflation at the grocery store is getting worse compared to a year or 2 ago that that is objectively incorrect. That's it. That's just a factual error. We got numbers yesterday from statistics, canada. Inflation numbers and they show food inflation has in fact plunged over the past year. The rate of food inflation and this is food purchased at stores. So that separates out food purchased at restaurants, food purchased at stores rose by 1.4% so low. Those prices in april were 1.4% more than they were in april of 2020 3, the annual pace of inflation in a grocery food inflation in april of 2023 was 9.1%. So out over the past year, the the rate of a and grocery inflation has fallen from 9.1% to 1.4%. If you go back 2 years and this is the the first to a two-year period time, it was 9.7% 2 years ago and it peaked in november of 20 to 22 at 11.4%. So you know, I think that people remember going to the grocery store when food inflation was 9, 10, 11% and they were traumatized by that. It was not easy and certainly not easy for on limited incomes and they have not forgotten that. But but the the facts are that food inflation has plunged to less than 1.5%. The last thing I'll say here is that if you look at how statistics canada collects food price information the vast majority of that comes directly from scanned items at grocery stores. It's at a point of sale I collected the grocery store, so it's very, very high quality >> So interesting what you're pointing out and yes, a lot of the big items, the big categories, fish, dairy, fruits and vegetables have gone down in price. But I'm wondering, paul is perception reality. Then because canadians continue to blame. The big retailers for the high cost that there is that their pain. >> Yeah, you know, I I think that as I said earlier, I think the, the, the grocery chains have a public relations issue on their hands. They got slammed in ottawa, not only by federal liberal government, not only by the left-leaning ndp, but by the conservative party as well. I think 30 there fairly easy target tonight. Yeah, I think you could criticize them for perhaps not explaining in in ways that canadians can understand, not explaining their businesses and explaining the reality of food food price increases. We've seen them be combat is and defensive at hearings in ottawa. I don't think we've seen them try to speak to ordinary canadians in a way that canadians might understand now would be an uphill would be an uphill battle. I think because I canadians are in a sour mood these days when it comes to the grocery retailers. They are indeed. And we were talking earlier about the loblaw boycott now being for at least another month. But it's hard to tell someone that spent, you know, 3.99 on peanut butter a couple years ago, that 10 99 is okay today. >> Paul bagnell, so glad that you could join us on this. Really appreciate it. Paul bagnell from bnn bloomberg. >> Coming up after the break, the aftermath of a turbulent singapore late, which caused one person to die.
