[ ] >>> It's time for fans and artists to stop paying the price for live nation's monopoly. >> You're watching ctv news channel. U.S. justice department wants live nation and ticketmaster to face the music in a new lawsuit. >>> Hackers have made good on their promise we can corporate data stolen from london drugs. >> Toronto pack welcome. >> And in other news, its official tachometer has its first wnba team. [ ] >>> Good evening and welcome to ctv news channel a, thank you for joining us I am akshay tandon. The U.S. justice department filed a sweeping antitrust lawsuit against ticketmaster and its parent company live nation accusing it of running an illegal operation in the U.S. >> Alleged to sustain this dominance live nation relies on unlawful, anticompetitive conduct to exercise its monopolistic control over they leave -- life events industry in the united states and over the fans, artists, independent promoters and venues that power the industry. >> In a lawsuit the justice department accuses it of using this live tactics including threats and retaliation to subjugate the competition to maintain it's stronghold on the live entity in the industry. The cup edition bureau says its aware of the lawsuit but is concerned with whether or not it will conduct its own investigation. Let's know again the president of west coast lawyers. Thank you for joining us and I appreciated. Of course there was a lot of concern over how live nation was working especially after what happened in taylor swift's tour in 2022. Does this lawsuit in any way surprise you? >> Not at all. You mention it, don't mess with the swifties. Congress started to hold a hearing as soon as there is a problem. This is something folks anticipated one live nation and ticketmaster merged in 2010. They would leverage their power and an ability to promote these artists and make concertgoers buy tickets through ticketmaster. That's what's happening and department officials first saw this problem in the two merged taught years ago. >> So talk to me what can he specked in the next steps of the case? >> I believe live nation will litigate this case. And litigate this -- it aggressively. I don't think they will push it all the way to trial back both consumers got politicians both sides of the aisle are really upset at ticketing companies in general, legislation out to get rid of junk or hidden fees. Problems with scalping. Even getting access to tickets is just and consumers are fed up. Rather than going to trial as a risk, if they lose at that motion phase, may see situation where live nation sells off ticketmaster. And enter into these long-term deals. >> Akshay: in this company live nation's controlling 60% of promotions at major venues at 80% of ticket selling operations to ticketmaster. That something live nation is disputing at the moment. But it's a split as we are discussing tell us about the impact this would happen fans who find tickets extremely expensive and the impact on musicians who say many times they are cash-strapped. >> The issue is live nation not only controls the artist promotion jackets actually managed, a lot of these venues. Of course we talk about ticketmaster. Really the question is what artists sentencing biz be better off if live nation was promoting the artists and of someone also smiting the stating. And it wouldn't result in fertile customer service and consumer prices. As opposed to one company. We see it more more from big companies, whether it's google, meta or amazon. They provide one service everyone wants or needs, as a result they hi and other

services that might not be the best option for concertgoers. >> Akshay: the action of the U.S. government and what's taking, what's proof and impact can this have one canadian side is concerned and the canadian government we'll have to do something similar otherwise we can see this monopoly continue in this country as well. >> What we've seen enforcement actions time and time again not just in canada but also the E.U. where there antitrust violations are taken seriously. Over the past when he six years I've handled these cases its not surprising when one governmental entity initiates something like this, other countries or jurisdictions while those who. It's pretty telling that here in the U.S. this lawsuit wasn't just filed by the attorney general, talked about 30 states joined in the attorney general. This is something that's really a problem across the board regardless of your political ideology. >> Akshay: alright. President of the west coast travellers I appreciate you're time and insight, thank you for joining us. >> I appreciate you having me as always. >> Akshay: and other news where tracking hackers have made good on their promise to release data they stole from london drugs. They refuse to pay 25 minute dollars ransom demand from online criminals eric london drugs says the leak includes employee information that they call a distressing situation. The western canada based chain was forced to close all of its stores last month after the cyber attack. It's a great one for basketball in canada, the wnba is coming to canada as they cut the pristine outside the U.S. >> We've awarded the city of toronto the 14th wnba franchise. [ Cheering and Applause ] >> Akshay: they will start playing into a 26 at the coquitlam coliseum -- they will move to larger scotia bank arena on occasion. The name and colours of the team are still undecided. >> A recent a person has said what the team name and colour we'll be, we don't know. It is a clean slate. We are very much looking forward to sourcing suggestions from the conceited toast name public. May think you have any. It's a very exciting day. >> Akshay: you bet it is. It's one of the worst kept e good evening and thank you for your time. >> Thank you for having me. It's a very exciting day. >> Akshay: >> Akshay: you bet it is. It's one of the worst kept secrets to be honest, the fact we are talking about it finally, long time coming it is here. >> You point out the step secret so I'll give a shadow to sharia mom and who broke the news a couple weeks ago. It feels vary official and so does the excitement around it. It couldn't come soon enough. >> Akshay: we heard from representatives there about the name and colour, but I'm curious because there is lots going on in the internet as well about what they are all thinking or indicating. What is you're take on that? >> I think it's a big mystery. The cards are being held close to the chest. I also think they need to do good with the province -- promise this will be canada's team she is looking beyond toronto in terms of naming so I don't think we would get any toronto related names or colour theme. It's like turning a fresh page, it's a new leaf. So to start that weigh would really send a strong message. It's friendly what a team like this deserves. >> Akshay: truly. Let me ask about what it means in terms of the impact on the sport. At the moment I think therefore canadian players and now a canadian team. >> It's a huge impact. We've seen what writers like myself and others are calling the caitlin clark effect. She of course entered as the number 1 pick this year in the wnba after coming off a phenomenal college season. But you're seeing what happens when young kids and bask about players boys and girls can see role models and players a model themselves after that. As you mentioned we've got extremely talented athletes in the wnba but still an incredibly small league. 144 athletes got 12 teams now 14 with toronto pick at the bay area team. It's really what the most important thing is. >> Akshay: what is your understanding that we understand it's a toronto team saying they'll be playing at the colosseum and sometimes scotia bank every night. But it's also possible they will be travelling to montreux and

vancouver. How will it play out? >> Thank a top executive key in the cultural development of that team and the raptors make the point to play their preseason games and other cities across canada to really try to reinforce that. It doesn't always work in terms of fans but to reinforce their canada's team and I think they will borrow from that model a little bit. I'm curious to see if they don't lean a bit harder into it and actually plan some of the regular season games and notches preseason games and other cities to kind of welcome and a broader audience in the women's game. >> Akshay: and I'm thinking of this katie carper generations like ours and and before us, we've always heard or jumped about this and wanted to have the team. For generations of speaking to a young player earlier in the show a tenth grade student who was externally excited. At the generations after her will always know that there was this team. But how much it took to get here is something we always seem to remember. >> Absolutely. When the toronto raptors were announced -- announced as the expansion team I remember floating in the naming contest in grade school and something like this by k. As you point out absolutely is going to be something that our generation and generations to come will feel such a part of but I thank the hard work is such an instrumental part of the raptors ownership group than broke up on its own because we believed in it. Something they fantastic at the presser today that was said was people really say women's sport and women's basketball are having a moment. And he said they have arrived. I think something like this really underscores that. >> Akshay: indeed a great day for women's basketball here in canada. Katie hansel, thank you for your time. >> My pleasure thank you for having me. >> Akshay: some other news where tracking the federal government introducing legislation that would extend canadian citizenship rights to children born abroad. >> The proposed legislation will extend citizenship beyond first generation in a way that six to ocean inclusive enough to hold the value of our citizenship. >> Akshay: it would automatically allow canadians abroad to transfer citizenship to their children. To be eligible they must spend at least three years in canada. >> I don't think it's going to have a significant impact but a thing for people who the results of legislative eminence have lost their past or right to obtain citizenship I think this will bring a lot of relief and ultimately eliminate a lot there because they have been fighting for this cause a long time. I don't think it will have major impact on numbers or our overall integration policy. >> Akshay: at this point the government has no idea how the people would be granted citizenship if the legislation is passed. And bc supreme court has ruled the problems can order the city of surrey to transition policing away from the rcmp to a municipal force >> This is obviously a huge relief for the people of surrey who just want this done. I want this done and everyone wants this time. It so important that we take this moment and I encourage the mayor and council to take this moment in the provinces there to close this chapter and move on. The more it -- >> Keeping the rcmp. >> It was a key promise by the new mayor was elected here is where she had to say and ordered the promise to stop it -- province to stop it. Here's what she had to say. >> Policing is a municipal manner and that is the sentiment shared by the sollecito ocean solicitor general. The premier, the former premier. As well as every single mla and surrey. The fact is the fort -- core challenge has revealed huge holds in this transition on multiple levels. And the true cost will have an extremely active extremely onerous impact on the city of surrey and especially surrey taxpayers. >> Akshay: the city filed a court petition for judicial review last summer that the rcmp must see replaced by the surrey police service. Now the province said it will continue the transition with are without the city's support. A with that time for a break. Coming up a group of U.S. senators urging prime minister judo to meet nato's spending target.

>>> They keep her staying with us I'm akshay tandon. A bipartisan letter from 23 U.S. senators urges canada to meet its two% nato target. The defence minister had this to say in response. -- thank you for staying with us >> I would talk to them about the 40 billion-dollar estimate we are making an norad modernization. We know we have work to do we have it since day one. Clearly it's in our budget to getting that done. >> Akshay: the letter comes to my. >> Speaker-04: nato member countries are set to meet in washington and experts say its an ever to get countries like in behind like canada on side but there is another threat looming. >> There is a growing recognition that there is a higher risk the next president we'll be president from. For any senators who see nato as an important alliance, these 23 clearly, they would like to clear away as many excuses as they can for president trump to take significant action they think would be detrimental to nato. Unlike more declaring where those who don't pay it won't be protected. >> Akshay: the federal government currently plans to spend $7.9 billion of the canadian armed forces -- on -- which would raise defence spending to 1.76% of gdp by 2029. U.S. president joe biden has said the U.S. does not recognize the jurisdiction of the international criminal court. >> It's that simple. >> It comes after the court announced this week it's seeking arrest warrants for israel's prime minister and defence minister and three hamas leaders. Israel has strongly denied charges of genocide and saying its doing everything it can to protect civilians as it tries to wipe out hamas in gaza. >>> The university of toronto has made an opportune representatives of a pro- palestinian encampment on it's campus. >> Given the duration of the -- an offer encampment and the growing strain on our community, it is time to bring this encampment to an end. >> Akshay: it includes protesters demands to divers from companies with ties to israel and the israeli government protesters have also asked the university cut ties with academic institutions but they say it is off the table.

>>> Siobhan morse joins me more with more. What made the offer this goal has on the table. >> 's is an offer the university said is fair and when they hope will satisfy demonstrators who'd been here since early may. They really have something of a pressure cooker coming up they say there has been more and more strain on the university community and are also coming into communication season so -- convocation season they would like to go ahead a -- disrupted. What the universities offering first first of all is a reaffirmation of their commitment to human rights. And engaging in a couple different progresses -- promises looking at things like more transparency around where the government has invested money, looking at the possibility of divesting that would be done by committing, the heart and mind in the sand know is they will cut academic ties with israel. They talk about the importance of maintaining those relationships and having an academic freedom for students although there was a willingness from the president today to improve or amplify palestinian studies here at the university. All those thanks are on the table. Students have been given 24 hours now to consider it and it's something the president said he hopes they will. They are giving us a quick initial reaction tonight and they do raise some concerns. One thing the president discussed is there is a 24-hour clock on this offer and at the and of that the university may be in the position to start issuing trespass notices and the president did not rule out the possibility of police clearing encampment spirit for students it creates wary and concerned that we setting up the possibility of encampment clearings and the kind of weigh we saw at universities in alberta. Its something they don't want to say -- c. They talked about wanted to see a peaceful resolution to this. But were not getting any sense at this point about whether the offer itself is something the students are willing to accept. They say they will fill us in on where they are thinking it is 11:00 o'clock tomorrow and they will take the night to discuss it and see what is next. The president said he is open to dialogue. He wouldn't call in negotiation and wood continue to talk. >> Akshay: thank you siobhan.
