(Dramatic music) (Cheering) [ ] >> Hamas wants to demonstrate that they haven't been crippled that they still have those weapons and the ability to use them. >> Renée: siren sound in tel aviv hamas fires rockets through gaza for the first time in months'. >> We the students are steadfast in our demands for disclosure, divestment and cutting ties with israeli schools and be involved in the israeli apartheid. >> Marcia: demonstrators meet with officials as the deadline to close on the income and approaches pete. >> Marcia: plus economic times are not stopping canadians are taking off on vacation, but their destinations might surprise you. [ ] >> Marcia: hello and mark those. Concerns about an escalation in the war between israel and hamas today, after rockets were fired tel aviv for the first time in months. To give these reporter has more. >>> A barrage of hamas rockets fired at tel aviv today, many intercepted. But not before sirens sending many running for cover. Israel's military says a rockets are fired and there been no reports of casualties. This 84-year-old woman says that shrapnel came crashing through the roof of her home, just north of tel aviv. [ Speaking Alternate Language ] >> Suddenly there was a huge boom, and smoke, fire and dust all of the house she says. Thomas has claimed responsibility for what appears to be the first long-range rocket attacks from gaza since january. >> I think maas wants to demonstrate that they have not been crippled and that they still have both weapons and the ability to use. [ gunshots ] >> Reporter: this comes as the israeli forces fight off a hamas resurgence in northern parts of the enclave, and continue their operation in raw file, against court orders and mounting political pressure. [ Speaking Alternate Language ] >> (Voice of Interpreter): our goal in gaza is especially emphasized here in raw file, says israel's defence minister, while visiting troops today destroy hamas, return hostages and maintain freedom of operation". Meanwhile, aid trucks continued crossing into southern israel thanks to an agreement to bypass the ruffle crossing which closed earlier this month when israeli forces took control of the palestinian side. Still, humanitarian organization say that there or not nearly enough accents point. >> We still have a problem with the amount of aid coming in. >> With today's hump attacks by hamas show resilience, now more than seven months into this war, it has some questioning whether israel's goal for fully eliminating hamas can be achieved german sharon, ctv news, ottawa b5 with me now is aaron david miller, the former state department of middle east divisor and senior fellow low with the carnegie endowment for international peace. Inc. So much for being with us. Why now? What is the significance of the timing, given that it's been four months since hamas launched on the salt into israel. >> The israelis are operating. And whoever successful that the israelis are. But the second is, of course, negotiations resumed this week, mediated by the qataris, egyptians involving the israelis and the americans. And I'm sure that the key palestinian decision-maker there will send an unmistakable signal that those goals of my it changed. >> Marcia: from wearing gaza with this strike originate, to your point about hamas wanting to make the message clear that they are still capable of doing this? What does this mean for israel's commitment to root out hamas in every corner of gaza? >> I don't think that the

israelis understand that's probably not going to be possible. Trying to just -- destroy classes of an organized military, which would mean keeping the hitting the rapid production facilities. Remember, you're dealing with a densely populated area, even with the numbers of palestinians that been displaced. I could've come from anywhere inside areas with the israelis have so far not one to go given the risks of additional palestinian deaths and alienating their key ally in the united states, in the meeting unmistakably clear what some of the do's and don'ts are with respect to israel operating in raw file. Get today, there were airstrikes in the northwest of raw folk, multiple palestinian deaths. Of this situation is growing increasingly fraught. And I'm afraid we're really on a route to nowhere. There is no instrument, no path underway that will provide a quick easy way to end this war. >> Sidhu using the israeli attack later in raw file, do you expect more from israel in the coming hours. >> The israelis are probably operating in raw for weeks. And I say another several weeks at least, unless the negotiations that are supposed to take place this week end up producing the temporary cease-fire in return for releasing additional hostages picking apart into that cat the middle eastern negotiations usually have two speeds, low and slower. You are dealing with indirect and no trust to say the least between the parties picking the key palestinian decision-maker is going to a abscond 20 kilometres below ground below khan younis, trying to make this decision. With the slow, onerous, hairy and dysfunctional sort of situation. >> Marcia: how much faith do you have in the resumption of these cease-fire talks this week? >> They will resume picking is a reasonable chance, but again, it does depend. I'm reading what hamas' calculations or on this. And again, they want to trade hostages, divide time for what he really wants woods and into the war, survival of key leadership and hamas there's the survival of hamas as an organization. And obviously the israelis are the heavenly opposed to all of the above. >> Reporter: he's a sober state middle east department advisor. Thank you so much for your time and your announcement.

>>> Here at home, pro- palestinian demonstrators are meeting with officials as the deadline to clear an encampment campus approaches. University issued a trespass know the saying they plan to take legal steps if the encampment is not cleared out monday at 8:00 am. Protesters are calling on the school to cut ties with israel and divest from companies profiting off the war in gaza. The school made an offer to protesters on thursday which was rejected. Organizers say they plan to hold a rally tomorrow morning. Ctv's sean lee song is standing with more. Sean, what are you hearing from students who are taking part in these encampment as the deadline approaches? >> Marsha, were hearing that they plan to stay. And as was going before -- as was the plan before they were going into the meeting you can see over my right shoulder that that is the entrance to the encampment, it's pretty well controlled by people running it inside right now. We also had some people trying to get into they. The workable standoffs picking things can get pretty tense pretty quickly around here. Focusing on what's going on inside. The meeting happened but half an hour ago. The meeting started about a half an hour ago between the university administration and encampment team. And I mentioned the exactly with the demands had been. They want the university to divest from any investment in any organization or company that could be funding the israeli military and weapons making. And there was also disclosure of any investment also cutting ties particularly to universities in israel. And of the university, their original offer had sort of laid out a framework where they could tame -- talk about things like divestment and disclosure, but no actual commitment and they said it was a heart know for cutting ties with academic institutions. And so that's where they were as this meeting begins. And you mentioned that 8:00 tomorrow morning as the deadline. And they're not exactly sure how the university will react. They have told us that they are going to court and are seeking an injunction. The team from here are actually planning to speak. And they believe they are on the right side of this picking that they will actually win and there we'll not be any sort of legal framework to move in with the police, but they are saying that they acknowledge it is a risk. But if you take a look of martial you can see inside of being cameron tonight. It is pretty peaceful. You see many people gathering, we heard some singing a little while ago. And we are waiting see just what happens in this, as I mentioned they were so far apart when these negotiations began. But they said longer university is going to the table, encampment spokesperson told me today that they are willing to negotiate in the hopes of having a peaceful resolution. But they're also aware of their situation. Those in edmonton and calgary, for the police have actually brought in picking the university said they do not want yet, the people inside of the income interfering that is what might happen. And the university seems to be ratcheting up picking up as we do have that deadline come tomorrow. We do know been cameron will be holding a rally tomorrow. His people from the ontario federation of labour here, though what we don't know is whether the police will be joining them as well. >> Okay sean lee song, we appreciate all that reporting picked up with all of that between the officials and students. I'm joined by a graduate student at the university of toronto. She is the official spokesperson of the encampment on campus. Hello to you. And can you give us a sense of what is happening right now with the negotiations? How far apart are these two sides. >> As cox or representatives are currently meeting with you've t. Edmonton they are looking over so I don't know how that conversation is going right now. But that being said, the initial offer that they did give us on thursday was more of a statement of university policy then. And so our counter offer was practical and tells university exact what they can do to meet our demands. >> Marcia: 's you rejected what the university put forward to you? >> Marcia: we rejected that first offer that they put out. As you've t. Advent no a bargain with unions all the time. And so we are proceeding with negotiations and we will continue to have talks picking it is specific to the meeting our demands. >> Marcia: the deadline is 8:00 am tomorrow. What you see happening in the hours now and then?

>>> So you've t. Is filing an injunction because they want to shift the blame to a court order, specifically calling the police and their own faculty and own stuff. We will continue to relay that in our demands. As we have in the past. With 40,000 plus people murdered, we are not going to... Spew help we want to approach the negotiating table in good faith and we ask that basic our demands seriously. But will be not meeting them at the table... >> Marcia: this is my final question. Do you think some university students there are prepared to be arrested and taken away buy police? We are hoping that this doesn't end with police brutality or a thing or faculty have their jobs taken away from them are students have to deal with sanctions. We're hoping university of toronto still does the right thing and just negotiate says instead of calling the police on us that given the gravity of the situation and that we know the risks or we aware of the consequences. And we are hoping obviously things don't escalate. But were willing to take the risks that may or may not come. >> We thank you so much for that. We appreciate the update. >>> Members of toronto's jewish community gathered along the waterfront for solidarity rally this afternoon. [ ] >>> Members of the group jewish east toronto organized a shoulder to shoulder solidarity event in support of the remaining hostages being held by hamas in gaza. Demonstrators called for their safe return. >> We are demanding that they are released now. >> Marcia: israel says around 100 hostages are still being found -- being held along with the bodies of 30 others. >>> Coming up on global news will tell you about a type of screen time that having a serious impact on children.
