The vancouver school board meeting today to discuss restricting the use of cell phones in schools. It comes after bc announcing earlier this year that school districts will be required to have policies limiting the use of devices by the start of the next school year. Ctv's kraig krause joining me now with more details here, craig. Bring us up to speed on what's going on. >> Well, good morning, marcia. So the last thing many students are thinking about right now as the return to the classroom in september. But school districts and school boards across this province are now task of coming up with a plan and policies when it comes to restricting cell phone use in the classroom for next year. In the vancouver school district is up tonight with their board meeting with addressing some of the motion. So one of the motions going on at the meeting tonight, that's on the agenda is that kindergarten through grade 6 will have to have their cell phones put away out of sight in on silent for the entire school day when it comes to high schoolers and middle schoolers. That's where it remains unclear. >> At this time, so motion is going to the school board meeting tonight, asking that the superintendent of the vancouver school district come forward with a plan in policy, some place by july 1st. We have just over a month until that decision will be made. But this is something that will be sweeping the entire province in every school district will have to have a plan in place ahead of the school year for 2024 in 2025. And this all comes after david eby, the premier here in the province of bc came in with an announcement in january, proposing these plans for the entire province when it comes to the threat of online, not harm along with distractions that students are facing here in bc. Also shared a personal story with his son about his son being on a full on his phone with friends during the lunch hour in recess and and did not having an idea of what they are a monitoring, what they're viewing and that there should be some parent parent guidance when it comes to what students are able to see when they don't have the parents or an adult in their again, this will be going to the school board meeting tonight. Wheels are moving forward on this band going on here in the province. >> All that was kraig krause in vancouver talking to my colleague marcia macmillan earlier today, new brunswick premier blaine higgs has banned a quebec sexual education organization for making any presentations at any school in his province. The group is called hpv global action leading a series of discussions at 4 high schools in new brunswick on friday. Blayne hagai took to social media, calling some the materials used by the group in his mind. Quote, clearly inappropriate. The head of the group has responded, saying she is disappointed by the ban in new brunswick and that the presentations are being misrepresented. She says the presentations were all vetted beforehand with all materials signed off by the schools involved. And just a couple weeks from now, members of parliament will break for the summer in the trudeau government is poised to try and fast track some high priority legislation. Before that, that includes a long-awaited framework to bring in a national pharmacare plan. Ctv's annie bergeron-oliver has more. >> Talks are intensifying on parliament, where the liberals are trying to quickly pass new pharmacare legislation that could make many diabetes, drugs and contraceptives free by year's end right now, only a fraction of canadian women are eligible for prescription birth control. >> At low or no cost through a public drug plan. The liberals launch the first phase of their pharmacare plan in february, offering of 1.5 billion dollars. So far, no deals have been made with the provinces and territories and quebec and alberta want to opt out. >> We're hoping it's not a photo-op. We're hoping that it doesn't become just a hollow promise, but that's why said we were concerned about pharmacare coming out won't visit the lake, getting ready. He struck straight out, but who is it can fall to the same kinds of issues that our truck strategy has. While many health care advocacy groups are on site saying a universal pharmacare plan >> Will improve the health of canadians. Some who testified at committee to the list of medications set to be covered is too limited. >> For many on an underdone insured individuals living with diabetes in canada. Most of the commonly prescribed medications would not be covered by the proposed plant. Another concern brought up to mp's that the universal single payer model could disrupt existing private drug coverage. We fear that this could crowd out private player, but payers. >> Which currently cover the majority of canadians, including one in 3 seniors. The government's pharmacare legislation has the ndp support. So it will pass the

He now says israel will be investigating how it was able to happen. Officials in gaza saying 45 people were killed. Many of the victims, they say women and children. The strike comes amid increased international pressure on israel to halt its offensive in rafah and the surrounding region. And for both israel and hamas to come to a cease-fire agreement back in our country, pro-palestinian protesters who have been camped out at the university of toronto for almost a month. Now are defying a trespass order. It ordered them to clear out by 8 o'clock this morning eastern the u of t is now taking legal action to get the students to leave. Saying this morning, lawyers representing the u of t served documents seeking an injunction order from the ontario superior court justice and asking for the court for an expedited case conference for scheduling. Here's what some of the protesters, though, we're saying in response. >> We are only here right now because you have taken this going to heart. And because you know, better that many who claimed to have more don't you o what integrity is? >> Of course, at other universities to police moved in quite quickly and cleared out camp. So you have to try to different approach. But this camp only grew over the last couple of weeks. Protesters say they plan to hold their ground. They want the university to meet its demands. There will be a meeting later today. It was a meeting yesterday of the university. Meantime is saying it is not going to di vast public investment said it has or ties it has with israel is saying that it is the one that runs the school, not these students. All right, meantime, a solidarity rally was held outside of a jewish girls school in north york. It's a neighbourhood of toronto earlier today gathering coming a day after shots were fired at the elementary school that happened on saturday. Ctv's relied on the has more for us. >> Showing strength in numbers, a large crowd gathered as parents dropped off their children at base was cut him entry school for class on monday. Everybody's there for each other and that's how we have to stand together on this unity in one and show that you hurt one, you hurt us all the show of solidarity comes after evidence of bullet holes in the windows were found over the weekend while no one was inside the school when shots were fired just before 5 saturday morning. The incident has left the jewish community shaken. Oftentimes you did stories on the news and its ads and you try to be empathetic when it's at home. It's a whole different this is not close to home. This is home. Police say it's too early in their investigation to say whether this was a hate crime or an act of terrorism. >> However, politicians have been quick to call the offence antisemitic. >> It involves the boss of empathy and compassion between people. It's a noted the pay over society into hate and and absolutely no place in toronto since the shooting. Police have increased their presence in certain neighbourhoods, including this jewish girls school. >> None of us want to have to drop her kids off at school behind heavy police presence. But this is unacceptable and things have to change and they hope this solidarity gathering is a step towards that. >> Rahim ladhani ctv news. The leader of the ndp marit stiles reacting to the announcement earlier today. >> With each new piece of evidence on the greenbelt scandal. What happened behind the premier's closed border indoors. Looks shakier and shakier. The ndp welcomes this special report as we think it will provide a clearer understanding of the government's conduct. Reports like these are actually quite rare and they're very serious. >> Back in 2022, the premier

of ontario, doug ford and his government removed land that had been protected in the greenbelt in order to build 50,000 homes. But after a huge public outcry and reports both the auditor general and integrity commissioner doug ford reversed the decision city of toronto now working with both the provincial and the federal governments to improve transit in the city, which is definitely needed. The partnership is aimed at promoting innovative solutions to try and deal with ongoing transportation problems in toronto. There's the mayor, olivia chow. It's a yearlong pilot project. It's hoping to use latest technology to improve the flow of traffic traffic in toronto getting worse and worse by the year. The partnership involves the ontario vehicle innovation network. Here's more from the mayor. >> Its offs beginning to out congestion problems using ai using better camera angle is an that the camera is using 5g is all of it. >> Initially, we really have to keep looking at new and more innovative solutions and technologies to help us better manage traffic and through sort of the common thread throughout all of this is a bit of enabler are the telecommunications industries. So for each of the technologies, we need to have something out in the field that connects us back to central that we then have the ability to remotely control or effectively better manage traffic on the right of way. >> 3 major telecom companies, bell rogers and telus have recently installed some technology across the city. That will be a part of this pilot project. Doctors concerned over the potential spread of avian flu in our country are now urging the trudeau government to better expense surveillance. The virus has circulated widely among cattle in the united states. And as ctv's kathy le explains, testing as started and staying ahead of the spread is very crucial. >> The cdc confirms a michigan farm worker is the second person to get infected with h5n1 virus tied to dairy cows. That person has recovered from mild symptoms and had pink. I similar to the dairy farmer from texas who contracted the virus in april. That current working hypothesis. >> That people in dairy farms may be exposed directly to milk, rather than expose to aerosols in the air. Currently, there are no cases of the virus in humans and cattle in canada for monitoring situation very not in the human population, but obviously the media, the bovine and broader. >> Million population, the canadian food inspection agency has confirmed that milk and milk products sold on store shelves are safe. >> Because they've been pasteurized. But the supply is being tested as part of the country's effort to expand surveillance of the avian flu. Lactating dairy cows imported from the U.S. are also being tested and there is voluntary testing of asymptomatic house. We need to expand in my opinion, to conducting cierra logical surveillance, which means looking for antibodies. >> That might suggest the past exposure. >> Either in a dairy workers or and cattle infectious disease. Experts say the government should also test wastewater for h 5, 1, >> Some canadian researchers are conducting those tests themselves. We would not be able to say. >> They came from humans are cattle or any other source. What it does tell us that the sydney is in the environment and so that can then allow us to begin to take precautions to stop its spread. >> While the risk of avian influenza infection to people in canada remains low. The concern, of course, is that if this virus has some additional mutations that make it more readily transmissible between mammals, it would be problematic. The world health organization says bird flu has killed about half the nearly 900 people. It has infected worldwide. >> Over the past 2 decades, kathy le ctv news, calgary. >> Turning to a major international story that we're tracking today in papa new guinea. More than 2000 people are feared buried alive after a massive landslide that happened there about 3 days ago. Have a new guinea is in the south pacific. It's north of australia. And one of the big issues and rescue teams are facing now. The remoteness of the area also proper census data, terms of how many people may have lived in that area and some very remote villages. Let's bring in ctv's tony grace in our national newsroom, who's following the very latest on this tony, bring us up to speed. What we know will talk. That landslide hitting friday while many people were sleeping, the devastation and the scope of it becoming a lot more clear today. The government in papa new guinea now estimating more than 2000 people were buried alive underneath the debris of that

landslide. Here's a little map showing you where it happened. This is a very mountainous region, as you mentioned, not a lot of reliable census data to to indicate how many people may be missing or to to check that against figures provided by the local communities. So right now I'm a sense of desperation setting. And here's a look at the aftermath. By the way, this is 6 to 8 metres. >> Of earth. And debris. That's that's covering up dozens of homes in the area and part of the problem is that this is such a remote area in the mountains, that it's been difficult to get heavy machinery up there. The first excavator, for example, just arrived yesterday. So act of desperation. In the meantime, people have been digging with their hands with sticks with with garden shovels, anything that they can gather together in order to try to access the area beneath the rubble to try to see if they can get anyone out alive. At this point. We understand only about 8 people, 8 bodies rather have been removed from the debris of that landslide, which happened after weeks and weeks of heavy rain. So then there's the question of getting aid in as well. And that's a whole complicated thing itself, todd, because there is a tribal warfare in the area and that means aid workers and experts who are trying to assess the stability of the land. I have to be shuttled in often with military escorts. So that slows the process down papua new guinea's nearest neighbour australia has been among the first to pledge support to offer aircraft, which are expected to be mobilized today and more equipment into the area. But you can just see by these images, todd, that it's just an absolutely the devastating and an absolutely unthinkable task and its magnitude to try and help the communities that have been devastated by this landslide. That happened friday. Yeah. And the efforts obviously try and find anyone tony, who may still be alive. That's right. And they do. There were screams heard from beneath the rubble on saturday and even some reports were indicating into yesterday. But the number of bodies that have been recovered so far versus how many people are likely still missing. It is just a massive, massive difference. There's quite a difference there. Now as I mentioned, have been have been doing what they can. But what you've also been hearing and seeing are just cries of anguish. One woman was standing on top of the rubble saying that she has 18 family members beneath the soil that she is standing on and essentially she's standing there helplessly because the world is, is sort of slowly picking up the news now of of the extent of this, trying to mobilize aid. And the other thing is, todd is they're trying to get experts in there to find out how safe it is to even begin digging through all of this rubble. We understand that water has still been flowing beneath the surface and that the ground has still been shifting, even as recently as this morning. So this is a task that is incredible in its magnitude, one that is just beginning to unfold now and one that is likely to take weeks, if not months to make some progress on top, right. And because papa new guinea is itself a fairly remote. That also leads to communication issues trying to get updates on what the latest on the situation is actually on the ground tone, even for, you know, internationally groups or trying to come in and help. That's right. Some of them are are are in office is hundreds of kilometres away and that's as close as they can get to being, you know, sort of on the ground quote, unquote, to try and figure out what's going on. We've heard from a couple of organizations already that are trying to get. >> More aid workers there. So this whole process of mobilization is being hindered not only by the remote location, the remote geography, the difficult terrain as I mentioned, the, the tribal warfare complications with violence in the area as well. And then just the sheer magnitude of what you're looking at about landslide, what's left behind. It's a it's a it's a story of international devastation. Todd, that is going to be ringing out around the world in the days to come. Ctv's tony grace with the very latest on what's happening right now and papa new guinea. Thank you, tony, for this bank stock. All right, a live look from ottawa right now, which is under a tornado watch environment. Canada issuing that watch for the ottawa gatineau area, warnings about strong winds, large hail. >> Take a look how dark the skies are there over parliament hill. Torrential rain. And yes, there are favourable conditions for the possibility anyway of a tornado environment. Canada warning people should be ready and prepared to take cover if the weather takes a turn. >> All right, in a moment for us. Boston beats minnesota in the oppression of women's hockey league to force a winner take all game 5. That was a couple of more in a moment. >> Ctv news channel. 24 hours Is Astro really 100% natural?
