Crystal Palace vs Tottenham LIVE!

Tottenham opened a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace as their unbeaten start to the season continued on Friday. Ange Postecoglou's side were matched by London rivals Palace throughout an even opening period but took charge once a Joel Ward own goal gave them the lead shortly after the break.

Spurs captain Heung-min Son then tapped in his eighth league goal of the season after 66 minutes to effectively seal the points and the visitors were in cruise control until Jordan Ayew struck in stoppage time for Palace.

Tottenham's eighth win from 10 games put them on 26 points -- their best start to a top-flight season since 1960-61. They are five points clear of champions Manchester City and Arsenal, who have yet to play this weekend. The return of Rodrigo Bentancur is a welcome boost for Spurs, although I suspect it's unlikely the Uruguayan will get off the bench tonight, particularly with Hojbjerg, Skipp and Lo Celso also in reserve.

The loss of Destiny Udogie is a blow, however. The left-back has been a revelation in the inverted role this season and his forward runs and pressing will be missed. Yves Bissouma is back in but must avoid a booking to be available to face Chelsea next Monday.

Ange Postecoglou has played down the significance of Tottenham potentially moving five points clear. The manager insisted his primary focus is on improving the team after he was critical of their second-half display against Fulham.

"It doesn't really add any significance because whatever happens Friday night there's still a full round of Premier League fixtures to be played and nothing of any real significance comes of that," he said.

"We're in a good space at the moment but again we've still got plenty of work to do to make sure what we do now is sustainable. That's the main thing.

"It's not about making a short-term impact, it's about building something which hopefully brings sustained opportunities of success for the club.

"There is a really good reason no manager will talk about winning a title in October or November because we know there's a long way to go."

Hodgson impressed by Postecoglou

Roy Hodgson first encountered Ange Postecoglou when both were in charge of their national teams and the Australian brought his side to Sunderland's Stadium of Light for a pre-Euro 2016 friendly.

In the end it was a 2-1 victory for England and the following year it was Hodgson on a plane destined for Down Under, en route to Melbourne for a short-term contract to advise A-League side Melbourne City where he was further impressed by what he saw from the Socceroos boss.

He said: "It depends on what you mean by adaptation to the Premier League. I think needing time to adapt to the Premier League is more relevant to players than coaches or managers.

"I think sometimes they do, especially when they come from a different country, come from abroad, a totally different culture, because of the intensity of the Premier League, the fierceness, the lack of time and space that's there for you and the physicality, that can be very different to a player.

"Coming from Celtic, playing in front of 60,000 or 70,000 people every week, being in the Champions League, coaching Australia, being at the very best club in Japan, I don't know if you need a lot of adaptation to come to the Premier League.

"He might have been a bit of an unknown or a surprise to a lot of people in the country, but he certainly was no surprise to me."

Postecoglou rubbishes Kane claims

Ange Postecoglou has rubbished the suggestion that Tottenham are a better side without Harry Kane, but says the striker’s departure has enabled him to create a “different dynamic”.

Spurs appeared as reliant on Kane as ever when he scored four times in a friendly win over Shakhtar Donetsk in his final appearance for the club, but other players, notably Heung-min Son and James Maddison, have stepped up since the season started.

“I’m not into this commentary that we’re a better team without Harry because the last game Harry played for us he did alright in our system when he scored four goals,” Postecoglou told Standard Sport ahead of his side’s visit to Selhurst Park.

“We’d have been able to squeeze him in somewhere — and I’m being sarcastic there.

“But him not being there just allows us to bring different individuals into the team and they change the dynamic.

“While the way I want my teams to play has a clear structure, what I try to do is create a balanced squad where individuals can change the dynamics of it.

“Having Sonny as our No9 is different to having Harry or Richy [Richarlison] as our No9. Not having Harry there does change us as a team because we’re using different individuals but if Harry was here the structure would be the same and we’d have the same fundamentals of trying to dominate the opposition and press the opposition.”

This could be considered the first test of Tottenham's supposed title credentials. Under the lights at Selhurst Park is still a fixture to fear - just ask Arsenal and Manchester United in recent years, and Spurs themselves - and a win will take them five points clear, so the pressure is there.

But this Spurs team are also to be feared, and this Palace team is lacking in that area. It will be a close affair, but the visitors should kick off the weekend with a win.

Crystal Palace have lost young defender Nathan Ferguson to a fresh injury blow ahead of the game.

The Eagles' Under-21s match against Monaco was Ferguson’s first 90 minutes since January 2022 due to a succession of injury setbacks.

Ferguson will need surgery on what is believed to be a serious hamstring injury in the latest major blow to the player.

Discussing the fitness levels of the rest of his squad, Hodgson said: “We don’t have so many now out of the question. But we still have Henderson the goalkeeper, Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise, so there quite big names. Add to that James Tomkins, who has picked up a calf strain."

Tottenham are deciding whether to risk Destiny Udogie tonight after the defender suffered from muscle tightness in the recent win over Fulham.

If the left-back is not deemed fit enough to start against Palace at Selhurst Park, Ben Davies, who has recovered from a knock of his own, could deputise at left-back.

Ange Postecoglou has no other fresh injury concerns ahead of tonight's game in south London, with Pape Sarr available after illness and Yves Bissouma back in contention following a one-match ban.

Brennan Johnson is pushing to replace Richarlison in the front three, while the likes of Bryan Gil, Alejo Veliz and Giovani Lo Celso will all be hoping for more minutes from the bench.

"The two main ones from the other night are Pape and Destiny," Postecoglou said Thursday. "Pape is fine, he bounced back sort of 24 hours after the game. He had a bit of an illness but has trained well. Destiny we are still going to assess.

"Obviously it is a short turnaround from the other night. We'll have a look today, see how things go and make a decision after that. Everyone else has come through fine and is available."

Rodrigo Bentancur is back in full training but is unlikely to be included in the squad, with the Uruguayan targeting a November return to action, while Ryan Sessegnon remains some way off following hamstring surgery in the summer.
