Crystal Palace vs Manchester United – Match Preview

The venue for Saturday evening’s kick-off is Selhurst Park this weekend, as Crystal Palace entertain Manchester United under the lights.

Both sides progressed into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup in midweek, with United thrashing League One outfit Barnsley 7-0 and Palace narrowly edging out Queens Park Rangers.

Crystal Palace’s summer signing Chadi Riad has been ruled out until the Christmas period with a knee injury, which is a big miss for manager Oliver Glasner.

Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Tyrell Malacia have all returned to Manchester United training in some capacity over the last week, as Erik ten Hag gets closer to having a fully fit squad at his disposal.

Crystal Palace vs Manchester United – Match Preview and team news

Form

Crystal Palace: LWDDW

After an unconvincing beginning to the campaign, Palace have slowly looked like regaining their stellar form of last season.

Summer recruit Eddie Nketiah netted his maiden goal for the club in midweek against QPR and Eberechi Eze was at his creative best to provide the assist for the opener and a touch of magic for the winner.

Consecutive draws in the league tell different stories, as they salvaged a point at home to Leicester thanks to a Jean-Phillipe Mateta brace and battled hard to earn a share of the spoils at Chelsea.

When you factor in their Carabao Cup exploits, the Eagles are currently four unbeaten in all competitions, a statistic they will be looking to extend on Saturday evening.

Manchester United: WLLWW

The Red Devils showed no mercy at Old Trafford on Tuesday night as they put seven past Barnsley.

Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Christian Eriksen all got in on the act with braces, with Antony dispatching a spot-kick in the first half.

That performance and scoreline, coupled with their 3-0 away victory against Southampton last weekend, has resulted in a positive period for Ten Hag and his players. The Dutchman’s players have responded appropriately to their 3-0 humiliation to Liverpool before the international break.

Last Meeting: Crystal Palace 4-0 Manchester United, Premier League, 6th May 2024

Crystal Palace flexed their muscles to annihilate Manchester United last time out, as Brazilian midfielder Casemiro had a game to forget.

Michael Olise, now of Bayern Munich, set the tone for his teammates early on as he skilfully outsmarted Casemiro before rolling the ball into the back of Andre Onana’s net to put the Eagles in front.

United looked bereft of ideas and Mateta emphatically punished the Red Devils by smashing in Palace’s second with a sumptuous near-post finish.

Tyrick Mitchell tapped in their third before Casemiro was bullied off the ball again by Daniel Munoz, who teed up Olise to grab his second in some style.

Crystal Palace were arguably the most in-form team in the league in the closing stages of the season, whilst that result and performance summed up United’s inconsistent campaign.
