'It's a cruel world': Cleveland Browns teammates robbed of jewelry, truck at gunpoint

Two Cleveland Browns players were robbed at gunpoint early Monday morning after leaving an area nightclub, according to a copy of an incident report filed by Cleveland police.

The names of the players are redacted in the report, but a person familiar with the matter identified the players to The Associated Press as cornerback Greg Newsome II and tackle Perrion Winfrey. Neither player was injured in the incident.

"As you know, it's an active investigation. (It's) ongoing. So I can't comment much, other than to say I'm glad our guys are OK," Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said after the team began its mandatory minicamp Tuesday. "I want our guys, all of our community, to be safe."

In an apparent reference to the incident, Newsome wrote on Twitter on Monday night: "It’s a cruel world we live in."

According to the police report, Newsome and Winfrey left an area nightclub at roughly 2:15 a.m. Monday and drove to a nearby bar, parking a 2022 Dodge Ram in the adjacent lot. When one of the players returned to the car around 3:30, he was approached by six masked men, according to the report, and robbed of jewelry before the suspects fled in the truck.

The second player told police he was in the bar at the time and didn't witness the robbery.

The Associated Press reported that Newsome was in attendance at Tuesday's minicamp, but there was no immediate sign of Winfrey.

"I'm just glad to see that they're alright," Browns defensive end Myles Garrett told reporters. "Saw Perrion yesterday and saw Greg today. ... I'm just glad to see them safe and sound, with us, still walking around, still blessed to this day, no matter what happens."

ESPN and other news outlets reported that a third Browns player, Demetric Felton, was also the victim of a robbery over the weekend. Felton's car was reportedly stolen from an apartment parking garage early Sunday.
